Random Historic Photo - First BRAF
posted: Jul. 02, 2026

This issue's Random Historic Photo is from 1971 and shows the first Broad Ripple Art Fair, held on the canal parking deck just west of the Rainbow Bridge on Guilford Avenue.
These photos almost went unnoticed in my mother's photo album. They are unmarked, and follow several pages of art fairs in Southern California in the book. It was only after getting out a loupe to investigate that I saw the Shell sign and the roof and sign from Hook's Drugs on College Avenue in the backgrounds That old Hook's sign is distinctive. I included a 1978 photo of the old Hook's and Shell signs as a reference.
Look at your old photos and see what history you can spot, then contact us to help preserve Broad Ripple history.
