Broad Ripple Park - all-ages, pay what you like, gates open at 6:00, music at 7:00
Musical Family Tree's Listen Local series continues with more tasty music in Broad Ripple Park. The proceeds from the show benefit the Indianapolis Park Foundation, so be generous when you're deciding how much you'd like to pay. Upland beer and food trucks will be available. The lineup for this show features three generations of Indianapolis independent music.
The band United States Three formed in 1993 and played until 2000, including a memorable gig in my parent's barn circa 1994. I remember getting a very nervous call from my dad asking why someone named Vess wanted to know about the power capabilities of the barn's electrical system. The show was big fun and I was immediately smitten with the band.
Over the years the band's lineup included Vess von Ruhtenberg (guitar, bass, vocals), Mark Cutsinger (drums), Andrew Angrick (bass) Mark Mahern, (bass), the greatly mourned and much missed LonPaul Ellrich (drums), Mitch Getz (guitar, keyboards), Courtney Kasier (vocals). The band has re-formed in a beautiful way; the current lineup is Vess, John Zeps, Mark Cutsinger, Andy Fry, and Emily Watkins. I can't wait!
Amo Joy formed in 2006 as a side project Adam Gross (guitar, vocals, woodwinds, keys), and quickly grew to a band of three; Steve Trowbridge (drums, vocals, keys) and the late Paul Cobb (bass, vocals, keys), adding additional members at different points in time. The band took a break after Paul's death to focus on completing and performing his unpublished solo recordings. That record, Hammer Screwdriver will be released soon and Amo Joy's eponymous fifth album is available now. Their music is a catchy mix psychedelic pop and fun.
Vacation Club is the newer band of the trio. They can be labeled as garage rock; raucous guitars and attitude, with a dash of surf thrown in for good measure. They've made their name playing in a small living room in Fountain Square. It will be fun to hear them under the big sky of Broad Ripple Park.

There will be samples of their wares - salsas, jams, rubs, marinades, mustards, and chocolates - and music by the amazing Sam King. Sam is a solo acoustic musician who plays a delightful mix of original songs and soulful covers. He played in the band Push Down & Turn for 12 years as the lead guitarist and always puts on a terrific show.

Dawes with Shovels & Rope
Saturday, July 20, 2013
Vogue Theater
6259 N. College Ave. - 21+, doors 6:30 show 7:15, $18
I've had a musical crush on Dawes since I first saw them at Locals Only in 2009, and I wasn't sure if the guys in the band were even old enough to be in a bar. I have to brag a little about my review of them that night, 'This might be the best band you've never seen. They've got it all - great songs, tight sound, good looks and boyish charm - and I predict a bright, well-deserved future for them.'
Dawes is now touring internationally, playing large festivals, opening for Bob Dylan, selling out shows, and they just appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman. The show at the Vogue promises to be great - check it out and soak in some of their throw-back California-style rock and roll energy.
Shovels and Rope hails from Charleston, SC. The band is made up of the duo Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst. They sing harmony driven folk, rock, and country songs using two old guitars, a kick drum, a snare, tambourines, harmonicas, and keyboard.

Such a Night: Recreating the Music of The Last Waltz
Friday, July 26, 2013
Vogue Theater - 6259 N. College Ave.
21+, doors 8:00 show 9:00, $15 advance, $20 at the door
My very favorite show that I saw last year was the recreation of The Bands's final concert, The Last Waltz, at Radio Radio. I'm thrilled that Matt Mays is recreating his recreation at the Vogue Theater.

The lineup for the show is a list of some of my favorite Indianapolis musicians. The backing "Band," is comprised of Tad Armstrong, David England, Wade Parish, Bill Mallers, and Johnny Socko alums, Matt Wilson, Josh Silbert, Charlie Krone, and Eric Evans. Throughout the show, guests include Brian Deer as Eric Clapton, Stasia Demos as Emmylou Harris, Gary Wasson as Neil Young, Mina Keohane as Joni Mitchell, and former Socko vocalist, Mike Wiltrout as Neil Diamond and Paul Butterfield. Producer and brains behind the show, Matt Mays will perform as Van Morrison.
After the death of The Band's drummer, Levon Helm, in April of 2012, a small group of Indianapolis musicians decided to get together and play the songs of The Band to honor Mr. Helm's legacy. As word of their plans began to spread amongst the local music community, the group grew larger and it was decided to recreate The Band's legendary final show, The Last Waltz. That concert, also a film and soundtrack directed by Martin Scorsese, features The Band as well as several of the biggest musicians of the day. I was lucky enough to see Levon Helm perform at the Austin City Limits Festival a few years ago and loved how happy he looks and his obvious enjoyment of playing music. This show is a wonderful tribute to him.
All profits from this show will go to support Down Syndrome Indiana, a non-profit group dedicated to enhancing the lives of individuals with Down Syndrome through education, support and advocacy.
This will be a wonderful evening and I suggest that you purchase your tickets now, the last two recreations have sold out well in advance.

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
