Benefit Party for Jude O'Dell
Saturday, April 6, 2013
Harrison Center for the Arts - 1505 N. Delaware Street
all-ages, 6:00 - 10:00 pm, donations accepted
If you don't know Jude O'Dell, you're missing out. She's a wildly talented musician and artist. She's a treasure-trove of old-timey music and fun. Her friends are throwing a party to show her just how much her community loves her. If you haven't had the pleasure of meeting Jude yet, this is a good chance to do that.
I've had the pleasure of meeting some wonderful and delightful people over the years, and this musical lineup includes a whole bunch of them: Michael Beck and John Alvarado Duo, Witch Hazel Valley People with Robin Harrison, John Barney and The Passengers, New Augusta Bluegrass Band with Dave Schroeder, The Chromatics, Dave Duvall and Allen Stratyner.
There will be wine, beer, soft drinks, and snacks available. Bid on a range of goods and services offered in the silent auction and dance and laugh. Kick off the spring season with Jude and friends.
This party promises to be as fun as Jude is - and that's pretty darn fun!
Midnight Spin and hotfox.
Saturday, April 6, 2013
Birdy's Bar & Grill - 2131 E. 71st Street
21+, doors 8:30 pm, show 9:30 pm
Remember those talented high-school kids that I started writing about in 2008 or so? They called their band "Sanuk" in the beginning and changed their name to "hotfox." shortly after that. Not only are they old enough to play in bars - and have been for a few years - they are sharing the stage with Brooklyn's Midnight Spin.
Midnight Spin is wrapping up a coast-to-coast tour after releasing their critically acclaimed record, Don't Let Me Sleep. Midnight Spin and hotfox share a local connection - Cathedral High School. Oliver Hopkins and Michael Preuschl of hotfox. are CHS alumni, as is Ben Waters, Midnight Spin's bass player.
The show promises to be great - say hello to the guys before they leave for summer internships and such.
Record Store Day
Saturday, April 20
Indy CD & Vinyl, LUNA music, Vibes - all-ages, free
This is the sixth year for Record Store Day, an event created to celebrate independent record stores. According to the Record Store Day website Indianapolis has seven indie record stores and three of them are in our neighborhood. How cool is that?
Indy CD & Vinyl, Luna music, and Vibes are all participating. Recording artists produce special offerings (records, CDS, EPs) that can only be sold at the independent stores. In the first year of RSD ten musical artists participated, last year there were over 400.
Not only do the stores have the RSD exclusive music they host in-store concerts and other activities from artesian craft fairs to cookouts.
Record Store Day marks the start of springtime for me. It's great to see everyone enjoying the day and our neighborhood. Check individual store Web sites for specific details.
Chad Mills and The Upright Willies Album Release Party
Saturday, April 20, 2013
Birdy's Bar and Grill - 2131 E. 71st Street
21+, doors 8:30, show 9:30, $10 (includes CD)
The Upright Willies are, Chad Mills (vocals, acoustic guitar), Bob Stewart (drums), Grover Parido (cello), William Rood (upright bass). Their sound is big fun, roots rock.
I recently had the chance to hear Chad Mills play a few songs from the new Upright Willies album. I've come to expect great things from Chad's songwriting and I wasn't disappointed. He does a great job writing introspective songs chronicling the battles between head and heart. He balances those with lighthearted tap-your-feet happy tunes too. "Lucy" is one of the fun songs, re-telling the tale (or is it tail?) of a doggy chase.
I can't wait to hear the whole record!
Barfly Comics 10 Year Anniv Party - with a bonus wedding!
Saturday, April 20, 2013
Radio Radio - 1119 Prospect Street
21+, 9:00 pm, $10 donation to Second Helpings
Wayne Bertsch is the mad talent behind the Barfly Comics in NUVO newsweekly. He is celebrating his tenth anniversary of drawing the strips by a stellar lineup of bands that have been featured over the last decade. With over 500 comics drawn and several awards won, Wayne is celebrating in a unique way - by getting married. Yep, he and fiancé, Carol Ellison, are getting hitched on stage, and you're invited!
Wayne and Carol chose four of their favorite musical acts to help them celebrate. Five Year Mission have carved out quite a name for themselves writing a song for every episode of classic Star Trek series. Whether you know them from their many local concerts, their appearances on Indy Style, or their music video birthday message to George Takei that went viral, you are sure to be blown away by these guys.
Up! Scumbag are easily the most prolific punk band to come out of Indianapolis. They released five full lengths records, and a split CD with Hate the Drake in the span of six years. They epitomize the DIY punk band ethics and never fail to get the walls shaking with their brand of stripped down, energetic, garage punk.
Jenn Cristy came to attention as a back-up singer for John Mellancamp before wowing crowds as a great songwriter and musician in her own right. Her skills on the keyboard seem super-human and her soulful vocals are cut from the same cloth that made Adele, Duffy and Amy Winehouse critical darlings.
The Danny Thompson Trio are the current project of Danny "Dr Roadkill" Thompson formerly of the Sloppy Seconds. No other musician in town is more associated with the Barfly Comic than Danny who has headlined the Elvis Birthday Bash every year. The trio concentrates on the later years of Elvis' career bringing by covering favorites like "Suspicious Minds" and "Walk a Mile in My Shoes".
In lieu of wedding gifts, Carol and Wayne are asking for donations to Second Helpings, donating 100% of the ticket price to the nonprofit agency that rescues surplus food from the community, trains adults for meaningful careers in the food-service agency, and prepares and delivers thousands of meals every day to other social service agencies - all at no cost. Carol and Wayne have asked me to collect money and tickets at the door. I that task is similar to being the guest book attendant, and I have some good practice at that, mostly from the early 1980s.
(tickets)
(to donate to Second Helpings is Wayne and Carol's name)
Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time. Visit Nora's Web site
