This one is from 2010. Note that most of the places CD mentions are gone, except for YATS and the Mousetrap. - Alan

This Past Summer (In Broad Ripple)

I didn't make it back to Alaska this past summer. I also didn't make it back to Lotus International Music in Bloomington. I stayed close to home. I was able to catch some great musical events within 2 miles of my apartment.
Karen Irwin was wonderful as Janis Joplin at Birdy's (71st and Keystone). She attracted a loyal crowd of those who have enjoyed her renditions of Janis at Karenoake over the years. At times spellbinding, Karen did not disappoint.
Soul Love Universe was dynamite at The Mousetrap (56th and Keystone). I knew that Kelsey Lee Smith could sing, but I didn't know that she could dance. She and the other singer/dancers looked like synchronized James Browns. And the band sounded simply funky.
I was able to catch two separate birthday parties for musicians at The Monkey's Tale (925 Westfield Blvd.), D-Roq and Johnny Redlocks celebrated their birthdays with musical jams. Both musicians have my old/young friend Joe Harrison in the bands. Both parties were a lot of fun. I love this outdoor venue with a big tree growing through the deck while facing the historic bar/house. A soda, shake, and garlic fries from Boogie Burger really top off the experience for me.
My Dad and I attended the Labor Day Jazz Festival again this year. Dad and I arrived at 54th and College in time to hear Cynthia Layne and three sets of Rob Dixon. We imbibed in the luscious cajun cuisine of Yats. Labor Day has become one of my favorite holidays due to this always well-produced event.
I didn't make it to Alaska and I didn't break the bank. Summers in Broad Ripple seem to provide (at least for me) an endless stream of artistic entertainment.
