RICK'S TOP 20 ALBUMS OF THE DECADE - Part 1
The following albums released over the last ten years have provided me with the most listening enjoyment:
11. VARIOUS ARTISTS-O BROTHER WHERE ART THOU SOUNDTRACK
This album almost single-handedly brought bluegrass and old-time country music back into the mainstream.
12. FLEET FOXES-FLEET FOXES
Brilliant vocal harmonies, plain and simple.
13. BRIGHT EYES-LIFTED OR THE STORY
His most ambitious, and, in my opinion, most successful album. And he's also one of rock music's finest lyricists (he really does recall Dylan!).
14. M.I.A.-KALA/ARULAR
These albums are two peas in a pod, both brilliant and original.
15. STROKES-IS THIS IT?
Too bad they couldn't deliver on the follow-ups, but this album deserved all the hype it got, and it still sounds amazing.
16. INTERPOL-TURN ON THE BRIGHT LIGHTS/ANTICS
Re-introducing the new wave, with a hard sheen.
17. TV ON THE RADIO-RETURN TO COOKIE MOUNTAIN/DEAR SCIENCE
They sound like nobody else.
18. STEVE EARLE & DEL MCCOURTY-THE MOUNTAIN
Rocked-out bluegrass that completely works.
19. IRON & WINE-OUR ENDLESS NUMBERED DAYS/CREEK DRANK THE CRADLE
30 year old English lit professor turns singer-songwriter, and emerges as one of the artists of the decade.
20. VARIOUS ARTISTS-JAZZ ICONS DVD SERIES
A little bit of cheating here, as these are DVDs. Taken from European TV performances (primarily from the 50s and 60s), these DVDs showcase artists in their absolute prime. Superbly filmed, the series includes full shows from John Coltrane, Art Blakey, Nina Simone, Lionel Hampton, Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson, Duke Ellington, and just about every other major jazz artist (excepting Miles Davis) you can think of.
