Life's Ripples from Broad Ripple United Methodist Church by Rev. Timothy Rasmussen

Coverage on the tragedy in Haiti has dominated all the news networks since the earthquake hit. The devastation is so over-the-top that it is hard to grasp the enormity of it. Even people who are there on the scene are having trouble comprehending living in a time when people just leave dead bodies by the roadside because there is no place to take them.
Financial aide and medical supplies are being gathered by churches and other organizations, and everyone is being asked to help in some way. This tragedy is one that will take months to stabilize and unfortunately there are people out there who will try to take advantage of Haiti's misfortune, so be very careful and do a little research before handing over your money.
It is not unusual to see Christian organizations of all denominations at the forefront of the relief effort. Long after the media has lost interest in Haiti, the people in Haiti will still be in need of physical, emotional, and spiritual care. The missionaries of the world will be there long after the media has left, and that is what God's people do without question.
Yes, this is a time to not only help with physical needs, but to also be in prayer for the people in Haiti. It will be difficult for the people there to hold onto hope, and they will need much encouragement as their infrastructure is rebuilt. We can pray that wisdom and knowledge will encourage building with better materials this time, and that there will be people in place with the knowledge to ensure that happens.
We can pray for strength and assurance in God as the people there bury and memorialize the dead. We can pray for healing as the injured recover, and we can pray for a sense of normalcy which is so important for the children's sense of security and well being. Prayer works, and when we feel helpless and can do nothing else, we can always pray.
