Our Mothers

Our mothers often teach us how to talk. Their direct encouragement or their idle chatter influence our language. We usually hear their voices more than any other in our early years.
My brother and I grew up with thick Southern accents. Same too with my sister. This was despite the fact that our first residences were in Ohio. Our mother's West Virginia heritage came though in our speech.
My family (especially Mom) claimed that I exaggerated my ability to remember my early childhood. In spite of their claims, below is an early account of my experience with language and Mom:

every word

i remember being bathed
in the kitchen sink
i remember her talking
to me constantly.
i remember understanding
my mother completely.
i was just a baby
and i had not yet to speak.
but i understood her completely.
every word
