Microbrewers Festival - a sold out event
posted: Jul. 24, 2009
The 14th annual Indiana Microbrewers Festival was held on July 18, 2009, at Opti-Park, located at 66th and Carrollton. While all of the past fests I have attended had temps in the 90s, this year we broke a record for the lowest high temperature. The great weather brought record crowds, estimated at more than 4000 by Broad Ripple Brew Pub owner and Brewers Guild of Indiana board member John Hill. Proceeds from the annual festival benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
More than 40 microbreweries from all over the country set up in the four huge tents at the park. Each offered samples of several of their hand-made beverages.
Two specialties were offered this year. In one tent were racks of kegs with insulating blankets. These were cask conditioned firkins. "Living beer...this process involves adding yeast to the serving cask for a secondary fermentation. There is no fresher beer in the world."
The other special brew was ReplicAle. Nine breweries made this special ale from a recipe supplied by the festival. This year's recipe was for German Alt. Many of these ReplicAles will have a face-off at Spencer's Stadium Tavern in downtown Indianapolis on Thursday, July 30, 2009.
Several area restaurants had food booths at the event. Entertainment was supplied by bands in the stage tent, corn hole, and a keg toss.
