Sam Shaber
June 30, 2006
Boulevard Place Café
Seeing Sam Shaber play is like a visit from an old friend. For me, it IS a visit from an old friend. I first met Sam in 1999, and was immediately smitten with her music and invited her to play at CATH, Inc. It was a bold invitation---we'd never had music before. CATH quickly became the Indianapolis stop for touring musicians, and I credit Sam with that. She was NYC-based at the time, and soon we had a stream of NYC musicians playing the coffeehouse. That led to CATH hosting music several times a week with performers from around the country.
Watching Sam play barefoot at Boulevard Place Café brought back some fun memories. Several years ago she booked a gig at another coffeehouse. That venue canceled her show at the last minute. Sam called me-I was in Boone County. I told her to meet me at the coffeehouse. When I got there she was entertaining her fans in the parking lot, barefoot.
Sam is touring to support her live CD in my bones, which was recorded in Chicago this winter and mastered here in Indianapolis. Sam has been playing all-request shows: fans e-mail their picks, and she makes her set list there. She bills this as the Tapers Tour. I have to admit that I was thinking taper as in candle, "Nancy Drew lit the taper to illuminate the attic...". In this case taper means tape, as in record. You can record her shows with abandon. Sam is a great songwriter. When she sings of her childhood home, it takes me back to my family home. Pretty amazing considering that she grew up in an apartment building in NYC named "The Eldorado" and I grew up on a farm near Lebanon.
Most of the musicians who played CATH also stayed at my house. Their only pay was passing the tip jar, all of the coffee they could drink and a place to stay. I made a lot of great new friends that way, and most still sleep on my sofa when they are in town.
I always have a new appreciation for our neighborhood after hosting guests. The musicians always marvel at everyone's friendliness, the Monon Trail and Broad Ripple itself. This trip I took Sam and her tour manager to the Riviera Club (after we had coffee at the Northside News Café and sushi at Naked Tchopstix---yes we waited an hour before we swam). They were duly impressed with the pool and the giant slide. Sam called her husband in LA to tell him about the pool. I felt all smug about our neighborhood as we sunned on our pink deck.

Hank lll and Assjack

The Vogue
It occurred to me that the last time I was in The Vogue I was watching an icon play with this grandfather - Bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley was playing with his grandson Nathan. Hank III is the grandson of the country legend Hank Williams and son of musician Hank Williams Jr. The first part of the show was exactly as I thought it would be. Hank and his band played country standards with a cow-punk twist. He paid homage to his grandfather and his peers with county music standards Folsom Prison Blues and This Bucket's got a Hole in it.

For the second set his band, Assjack, joined Hank III. They play full-out-as-energetic-as-it-gets punk rock/psychobilly. I'm an old punk rocker (a little bit old, a little bit punk rock). I saw Wendy O. Williams smash stuff on that very stage. I had not been to a show like that in a very long time. I'd forgotten how crazy the mosh pit is. It seemed so much gentler in my day, back when we walked three miles uphill in the snow to slam into each other. I really enjoyed watching my friend Tom Coryell having fun in the middle of the craziness--- from my safe perch on the sidelines. Singer Gary Lindsey was bloody and sweaty by the end of the show, much to the delight of the crowd. It was a great - ears still ringing in the morning - trip down memory lane.

Previews
Tecumseh Flyers
July 20th, 2006
Boulevard Place Café 4155 Boulevard Place
7pm, $3
Boulevard Place Café is a great place to see music. The food is good; there is original art on the walls and free WiFi. The shows are non-smoking and family friendly. I've been a Tecumseh Flyer fan for a while. I saw them again recently and was reminded why. Jason Hathaway and Guichelaar are talented musicians and swell guys. They are a real roots rock treat.

Brenan
Thursday, July 20th, 2006
Rouge
7pm $3
Rouge is starting to book live original music. It was only a matter of time until bands were back at 6308 Guilford Avenue, the location of the late great Patio. The owners have cleaned the place up, ripped up the carpeting (did you even know it was carpeting on that floor?) and added great food.
Brenan's sound is very mature for a band of five young guys - rock music at its best. Love Letter Effect will be sharing the bill. I'm looking forward to this show-and also to my feet not sticking to the floor.

Broad Ripple Street Fest
Saturday, July 22nd, 2006
Broad Ripple Avenue between College and Winthrop Avenues.
3-10 pm, $5 adults, $2 children 6-12, sorry-no doggies.
Eat, drink and be merry on the Avenue! This is the first annual Broad Ripple Street Fest. It is sponsored by BRVA, Q95, X103, WNDE and Bud Light. The lineup is a nice mix of local, regional and national bands.
3:30-4:15 Autovauughn
4:45-5:30 One in the Same
5:45-6:30 The Elms
7:00-8:00 Margot and the Nuclear So and So's
8:30-10:00 Todd Snider
I'm excited about this show (thanks for working for me Brandi). Autovaughn are hipsters from Nashville, TN; I really like the songs I heard on their website. I couldn't find anything out about One in the Same, mostly because googling their name comes up with a lot of random stuff, including the queenbeemusic.com website. The Elms hail from Seymour, sing of heartbreak and redemption. They were recently named one of Indiana's breakout bands in NUVO and played a great show at The Vogue last month. Broad Ripple is the stomping grounds for Margot and the Nuclear So and So's and their fans. I predict that their song Broad Ripple is Burning will be the unofficial anthem of the festival.
Todd Snider is a tremendous songwriter, and a terrific storyteller. I always enjoy his guest spots on the Bob and Tom show.

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
