Election Day Journal
November 4, 2008

6:31 P.M. - Josh Mitchell called me in the morning. I woke up at 9 A.M. and gave him a call back. I said, "Are you ready to change the World?" Josh said, "You bet I am!" I said, "I'm going to get a shower, then we will change the World." Josh said, "O.K."
When I was clean and refreshed, Josh showed up. We packed an election day newspaper and granola bars for an anticipated long wait to vote. We discussed the state of the World. We both agreed to cast our votes for citizens in other countries who may suffer or benefit at the hands of the only superpower.
We began the challenging walk to John Strange Elementary School. On the way out of our neighborhood, we saw Sean Riley sitting outside of his building. He was getting ready to vote. He said his friend Paul could take us all to vote. That sounded great to us. Paul pulled up and off we went.
Incidentally, Sean Riley's father drove the latrine truck from Selma to Montgomery on Martin Luther King Jr.'s historic march. Sean and his father were overjoyed to be voting today.
At John Strange there was virtually no line. So Josh and I got more good luck. We voted and were quickly home.

11:02 P.M. - Charlie Gibson of ABC News has just declared Barack Obama president. Obama has reached the threshold of 270 electoral votes. Celebrations around the World have ensued. And, my guy has won.

11:18 P.M. - John McCain give a very generous and elegant concession speech.

11:58 P.M. - Barack Obama gives his acceptance speech in Grant Park of Chicago, Illinois. He wove a beautiful historical tapestry of the United States of America. He spoke of service and citizenship as he moved the enormous crowd. I was laughing and crying at the same time-one of my favorite emotional experiences. After 20 years of studying Civil Rights History, I still can't wrap my head around this. But, I have certainly wrapped my heart around it.
