Query Corner - BRHS Gym History
posted: May 29, 2025
We have been trying to piece together the history of the BRHS basketball gymnasiums.
Here is what has been found:
1) The first gym was built in 1934. It was a combined gym/rec space, perhaps with a stage. It seems like that one was NOT a regulation-sized basketball court, and could not be used for official games. I do not know where this would have been in the building. One account says "The old auditorium was remodeled into a gymnasium".
This photo was marked 1936. If true, then this would be the one with a non-regulation basketball court. That date is suspect, as I see this is the same gym after 1939. Hmmm....

2) In 1939 a regulation gym was built. I assume this was the one on the south side of the building with the entrance on the southwest at Compton. That would be the library/media center now. Apparently the girls took over the old gym space.
This one is marked as carnival mid 1960s. This would be the regulation-sized court. I can now see that this is the same space as in 1936. So, either the 1936 photo is mismarked or the court was made larger in the existing space.

3) in 1945/46 the east wing was added and a new girl's gym was built, with ROTC beneath it. That gym is now the orchestra room.
My questions
- Was there no gym or auditorium before 1934?
- Where was the first gym in the building?
- In 1946 when the girls moved into the new gym on the upper floor of the new east wing, what became of the old girl's gym?
Do any readers know any other BRHS grads that might know this history? I wonder who the oldest BRHS graduate is? That person might know!
