Random Historic Photo - BR Park Pool mid-1930s
posted: Oct. 03, 2024

This is a photo of the swimming pool that was at Broad Ripple Park. Pictured are Betty Murnan and Betty Applegate. The pool was located in the northwest section of the park. I don't know the date, but probably around 1936. It was taken by Mary Jane Harrison, who you will hear more about after I finish my interview transcriptions. For now, Mary Jane was a multi-ribbon winning swimmer in Broad Ripple in the 1930s.
The picture came to me recently from Terry Wilgus (daughter of Mary Jane Harrison), now living in Florida. She randomly saw a reference to our website BroadRippleHistory.com in a string of Facebook discussions and contacted me. She had many Broad Ripple pictures to share. (The Gazette provided a yummy Brewpub lunch for the interview)
This is a reminder to you! If you know anyone who lived or had relatives in Broad Ripple, ask them if they have old photo albums!!! It is important to preserve our history. If you have pictures to share you too could get a Brewpub lunch.

I knew Betty Murnan (in the photo) from the Broad Ripple High School reunions that the Gazette ran in the early 2000s. Betty Murnan-Smith, class of 1939, attended the 2002 and 2003 reunions. The multi-class reunions were held at the Riviera Club each June. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet people that grew up in Broad Ripple and record their stories. I got to know each of them. Tragically, Betty died in 2006 after being hit by a car.
Here is a link to the pictures from
that reunion.
