Part Forty-One

Things I Remember
Edna Hague Roberts
July 27, 1959

Edith and A.J. [Spaulding] went from East Park to Fletcher Avenue and was there during the Depression. He organized the Goodwill in Indianapolis, going to Boston for training in that. Nitha worked with them in the first Goodwill store at Fletcher Place. It was a real trying time for the Spauldings but they came out on top.
From Fletcher Ave, they were moved to New Albany. We made a lot of trips down there. The first time we went we left Edith at home - sick that I was miserable, too, thinking of her. She could hardly bear to see us leave. I remember the day not too long after that when I had a letter telling me she turned the ironer over on her foot and was feeling so bad. I went to the corn field and talked it over with Russell and before too many hours was on the interurban on my way down there. Another time she had just gone home from the hospital after hysterectomy surgery and I made a surprise visit by interurban to spend our birthday together [Edith and Edna are twins, remember?]. Another time we were going down as Teacher Association time for the week and couldn't leave until after a minstrel show Wed. night that Cac had an important part in. Everyone got sleepy and went to sleep on the outskirts of New Albany. I woke Russell to take over and they all commented on what a short time it took to drive that far. Our first trip to New Albany was interesting because of the knobs or huge hills we saw in southern Indiana.
