Mayor Hogsett And Indy DPW Cut Ribbon On First Phase Of Monon Trail Widening Project
posted: Dec. 01, 2022

Mayor Joe Hogsett (on November 17, 2022) joined the Indianapolis Department of Public Works (Indy DPW) and local leaders to cut the ribbon on the first phase on the Monon Trail Widening Project. Since the start of construction in March of this year, this $1.8 million project widened the Monon Trail between 14th and 56th streets, providing more space for walking, biking and commuting by trail.

"The Monon is one of the best public infrastructure success stories in Indy. It is worth protecting, it is worth maintaining, and it is worth improving," said Mayor Hogsett. "This improvement is just one part of a larger effort to improve trails and greenways. Thanks to the collaboration of local, federal, and philanthropic partners, over the next 5 years our City will invest nearly $100 million into our trail system."
While work on the most southern portion of the trail between 10th and 14th streets will be completed after North Split construction wraps up, Indy DPW's project from the North Split construction zone to 56th street has been completed. Including improved intersection infrastructure, a complete resurfacing, and up to four feet of additional width through the trail corridor, this upgrade will make this historic trail a safer and smoother option for travel.
The City's 2023 budget, passed earlier this year, includes a new Trail Maintenance Team, which will be drawn from Indy DPW's Operations Division. The new team will be supported by $600,000 in new equipment to maintain the City's trail system.
"Continued investments and improvements to our City's trail network like the widening and resurfacing of the Monon Trail should be celebrated by our entire community and especially by all trail users," said Kären Haley, Executive Director of the Indianapolis Cultural Trail, Inc. "The Monon plays a vital role in our city's connectivity eco-system, serving as a primary link to the Indianapolis Cultural Trail: A Legacy of Gene and Marilyn Glick and our downtown neighborhoods and cultural districts and also as home to several Pacers Bikeshare stations which are used as both transportation and recreation by our residents and visitors."
The second phase of this effort (similarly widening, resurfacing, and improving the Monon Trail corridor between 56th and 96th streets) is anticipated to begin construction in 2024.
