The 24th annual Ann Katz Festival of Books & Arts is October 24 to November 13, 2022, at the Jewish Community Center, located at 6701 Hoover Road. The event is a three-week festival featuring well-known authors, award-winning films and local visual and performing artists. Most events are $10 or attendees can purchase a Festival Pass for $40, which is good for general admission to all events. More information and tickets are available at: www.JCCindy.org

JCC 2022 Ann Katz Festival of Books & Arts - by Mario Morone

Journalist Matthew Teller's highly original and readable "biography" Nine Quarters of Jerusalem: A New Biography of the Old City, features Jerusalem's Palestinian and Jewish communities, but also spotlights its Indian and African populations, its Greek and Armenian and Syriac cultures, its downtrodden Dom Gypsy families and its Sufi mystics. It discusses the sources of the Old City's holiness and the ideas - often startlingly secular - that have shaped lives within its walls. He will speak in-person at the JCC on Monday, October 24 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10.

Jean Hanff Korelitz, author of the novel The Latecomer appears in-person on Tuesday, October 25 at a 6 p.m. reception with a program commencing at 7p.m. Program tickets are $10 and $28 for her book and the program. Ms. Korelitz's novel follows the story of the wealthy, New York City-based Oppenheimer family, from the first meeting of parents Salo and Johanna under tragic circumstances to their triplets born during the early days of IVF. As children, the three siblings feel no strong familial bond and cannot wait to go their separate ways, even as their father becomes more distanced and their mother more desperate. As the triplets prepare to leave for college, Johanna, faced with being truly alone, makes the fateful decision to bring a fourth child, "the latecomer," into the world. The Latecomer has garnered rave reviews from outlets including the New York Times Book Review, The Washington Post, Good Morning America, PEOPLE and Oprah Daily.
Jean Hanff Korelitz is the author of The Plot (adaptation forthcoming from Hulu, to star Mahershala Ali), You Should Have Known (which aired on HBO in October 2020 as The Undoing, starring Nicole Kidman, Hugh Grant, and Donald Sutherland) and Admission (adapted as a film in 2013 starring Tina Fey).

Artist Marianne Glick has a gallery reception with free admission on Wednesday, October 26 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the JCC. Ms. Glick has become one of Central Indiana's most renowned and beloved artists. Her personal mission is to ignite, inspire and direct energy for positive action; her paintings allow her to colorfully express her mission and hopefully bring joy to those who view them. This exhibit is inspired by Glick's love of '80s music and the impact it has had on her. Included in this group are "River of Dreams" by Billy Joel, "Walking in Memphis" by Marc Cohn, and "Mardi Gras," "Cool, Cool River" and "Slip Slidin' Away," all by Paul Simon.
Lisa Barr will discuss her New York Times bestseller, Woman on Fire on Thursday, October 27 at 7 p.m. Virtual Tickets are $10. Woman on Fire is a gripping tale of a young, ambitious journalist embroiled in an international art scandal centered around a Nazi-looted masterpiece. The book is being adapted into a film that Sharon Stone will produce and star in. Ms. Barr's previous works are the award-winning Fugitive Colors and The Unbreakables.

The Heartland Film Winnings Shorts is Saturday, October 29 at 8 p.m. at the JCC with films to be announced. Tickets are $10.

Micheline Maynard will appear in-person on Tuesday, November 1 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the JCC to discuss her book, Satisfaction Guaranteed. The book is about Zingerman's Deli in Ann Arbor, Michigan that became famous for its generous sandwiches, crusty bread and flavorful coffee, all locally produced. But beyond being a place to eat, Zingerman's also spread its gospel of joyful customer service and employee equity across the business world. As Zingerman's approaches its 40th anniversary in 2022, journalist Maynard's Satisfaction Guaranteed tells readers how they built on their mission of good food, good service and good finances to become a company whose reach spans all corners of the gourmet food world, and how other business can adopt their methods and philosophies. Ms., Maynard will appear with local restaurant and philanthropist Martha Hoover.

Dara Horn appears in-person at Beth-El Zedeck (located at 600 W. 70th Street) on Thursday, November 3 at 7 p.m. to discuss her book, People Love Dead Jews, which is a winner of the National Jewish Book Award, and a New York Times Notable Book (Best Books of 2021) and a Chicago Public Library Best Book of 2021. The title reflects on subjects like the international veneration of Anne Frank, Dara Horn challenges the reader to confront the reasons why there might be so much fascination with Jewish deaths, as emblematic of the worst of evils the world has to offer, and so little respect for Jewish lives as they continue to unfold in the present. Tickets are $18. Along with this essay collection, Ms. Horn is the award-winning author of six books, including well-known titles A Guide to the Perplexed and The World to Come. Her books have been selected as New York Times Notable Books, Booklist's 25 Best Books of the Decade, and San Francisco Chronicle's Best Books of the Year, and have been translated into 11 languages.
The Book of Ruth is a short film Indiana premiere that includes a question-and-answer session with actor Chen Drachman in-person at the JCC on Saturday, November 5 at 8 p.m. The film is a hypothetical "what-if?" short film written, produced by and acted in by Chen Drachman and starring Tovah Feldshuh, in which a Passover seder is followed by a surprising revelation of the family matriarch's secret identity. Tickets $10.

Holy Sparks celebrates 50 years of Women in Rabbinate Spirit & Place Festival art gallery reception on Monday, November 7 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in-person at the Indiana Interchurch Center, located at 1100 W. 42nd Street. Admission is free. The JCC is partnering with the Center for Interfaith Cooperation and Congregation Beth-El Zedeck on this art exhibition, which will be supplemented with remarks by Rabbi Sandy Sasso and stories of other prominent religious women in Central Indiana.
Lana Melman, author of Artists Under Fire: The BDS War against Celebrities, Jews, and Israel, attorney and 20-year veteran of the entertainment industry will speak in-person at the JCC on Wednesday, November 9 at 7 p.m. Ms. Melman will provide Israel supporters with an action plan to stand up to cultural boycott campaign BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions). Tickets are $10.

Samantha Vinokor-Meinrath, author of #antisemitism: Coming of Age During the Resurgence of Hate, will appear in-person at the JCC on Thursday, November 10 at 7 p.m. Her book takes a deep dive into how the rise in antisemitism from both the political Left and the Right is impacting the identity development of Jewish Generation Zers. Author and award-winning educator Vinokor-Meinrath currently serves as the Senior Director of Knowledge, Ideas, and Learning at the Jewish Education Project. Tickets $10.

The popular Indianapolis based Klezmer band IndyKlez appears in concert as they play an intoxicating flavor of Eastern European music, including the earthiness of folk sounds and the sophistication of jazz and classical music with a splash of pop and a pinch of Broadway on Saturday November 12 at 8 p.m. at the JCC. Tickets are $15.

Siona Benjamin, an Indian Jewish artist who grew up with Muslims and Hindus and, attending Catholic and Zoroastrian schools, will present with the history-making Rabbi Sandy Sasso, Blue Like Me: Identity Exploration with an Indian-Jewish Artist and a Female Rabbi Spirit & Place Festival Program on Sunday, November 13 at 2 p.m. in-person at the JCC. Ms. Sasso is the first woman to serve as a congregational rabbi and part of the first wife/husband rabbi team. Siona and Sandy will speak about the sacred responsibility of holy storytelling and teach the audience how they can create sacred stories for themselves. Enjoy Siona's artwork interpreted by talented dancers, and following the program, a reception featuring Indian Jewish food!
