Letters to the Editor - Climate Change by Tom Probasco
posted: May 26, 2022

Note to our readers: Letters to the Editor are the opinions of our readers and not necessarily those of this paper.

A couple of months ago by now, 350.org reported that the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) had released a new report, and that as expected, it paints a very, very dire picture of the future of our climate.
Countries aren't doing nearly enough to protect against the disasters to come as the planet continues to heat up. And these disasters will be much bigger and more widespread than predicted just a short time ago.
The post goes on to say that the report makes for grim reading, but that there's one key statistic that's missing from it: the size - and strength - of the climate movement.
Millions of members and activists. Tens of thousands of organizers and donors who know something the fossil fuel industry doesn't want known: it's not too late to avoid the worst impact of the climate crisis, and the only way to do so is by shutting down their entire industry forever.
The reference to these many activists reminded me of something from a long time ago.
I grew up in farm country in southwestern Ohio, and I learned of the practical view of the world that farmers generally subscribed to. This practicality was often reflected in a column I regularly read in the Ohio Farmer all those decades ago. It was called "The Country Parson Ponders" and was written by Russell Hoy. I've saved this one:
"God . . . has no hands but our hands to do His work, no feet but our feet to carry the good news of His love, His help, and His forgiveness. He will help us, but it is our responsibility to turn swords into plowshares and spears into pruning hooks. It is the mission of men to convert battleships into ships of mercy, to convert weapons of warfare into instruments of peace."
And now, to shut down an industry that is killing the only home we will ever have. It's an awfully tall order, but the alternatives don't look good. As has been said before, physics and chemistry won't reward good intentions, especially just the appearance of such, by companies engaged in what's known as "greenwashing."
You can join those acting as God's hands and feet to heal the world by supporting organizations like the Citizens Action Coalition, the Hoosier Environmental Council, and the NAACP. Go to their websites today and learn how to help, before it truly is too late to avoid the worst.
