Generation to Generation Conference Aug. 27-29

Critical issues decimating the African American community of Indianapolis will be the focus of the Generation to Generation Conference that will be held Aug. 27-29 at Scott United Methodist Church, 2153 Dr. Andrew J. Brown Avenue.
Theme of the conference is "Rebuilding the Village II." Its theme attempts to capture the strategy of self-help in solving Black community problems.
Participants include some of the top African American elected and appointed officials and influencers in the city and state.
Following is a list of symposiums and events. All events will be at SUMC indoors and on the grounds under a tent. Covid precautions will be enforced. A mask is required for all indoors events. Events are cross-generational and include several activities for adults and youth. Numerous news and feature story opportunities are expected.
Friday, Aug. 27
- 2 p.m. Council of Elders. Leaders of the largest Black ministerial organizations come together to discuss the role the Black church must take in Indianapolis.
- 4 p.m. Black Leadership Roundtable. Leaders of various African American institutions discuss the issues and seek to reach agreement on solutions.
- 6 p.m. Opening address by Indiana United Methodist Church Bishop Julius C. Trimble.
- Art exhibit opens, showcasing some of the most talented artists in the city.
- 6:30 p.m. A showcase of talent performs until dark under a big tent.
Vendors will reflect a cross-section of entrepreneurs.
Saturday, Aug. 28
- 9 a.m. State of Health of the Indianapolis Black Community. Dr. Virginia Caine, Marion County Department of Health.
- 10 a.m. Empowering Strong Black Women. Symposium by the Association of Black Social Workers.
- 10. a.m. About Your Money. Strategies for financial wellbeing.
- 10 a.m. Basic Sewing. Teaching basic sewing skills.
- 10 a.m. Understanding Tech. Teaching basic tech skills.
- 11 a.m. PraiseStage - Performance about life issues.
- 11 a.m. Basic Gardening. Teaching basic gardening skills.
- 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. Your Mental Health. Four sessions focused on mental and emotional challenges within the African American community.
- 1 p.m. Black Political Leaders' Report to the Village. Several top elected officials provide an update on what they are doing to address community challenges.
- 2 p.m. Healthy Eating. Basic instruction in healthy eating.
- 2:30 p.m. Wonderfully Made Designs Fashion Show. An array of fashions designed by local talents.
- 3 p.m. Stop Killing in the Name of Love - A Forum About Gun Violence. IMPD Police Chief Randal Taylor and others will dissect this pandemic and offer solutions.
- 5 p.m. Building Bridges. Discussion to close divides between the American Black community and continental African communities now residing in Indianapolis.
- 6:30 Village Chat - An array of top talent performs until dusk.
Sunday, Aug. 29
- 11 a.m. Service and Gospel Concert. Speaker is Rev. Clyde Posley.
On Saturday, Aug. 28th, youth and teen programming includes a variety of skills building and life lesson programming. Teen celebrities include Tic Toc celebrity Drip Two Times. Also making an appearance will be the Black Cowboys, a local group of horsemen who will be on hand to entertain youth and adults, and Malcolm Jones, 8-time Indiana Golden Gloves champion.
There will also be a vendor's fair, health screenings and more.
