Several readers have asked us about rumors heard concerning the future of the fire station in Broad Ripple at 6330 Guilford Avenue [G4 on
map]. We asked Mayor's Neighborhood Advocate Natalie van Dongen and she sent our questions to Rita Reith from the Indianapolis Fire Department.
Station #32 at Westfield and Guilford
Rita's reply:
Attached (below) you will find the information created by IFD and presented in 2015 and 2016 to both the BRVA and the Butler Tarkington associations several times, reference Chief Malone's re-deployment plan and specifically IFD Station 32 located at 6330 Guilford Ave. Station 32 is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and as such could not be "torn down" as indicated below. It would most likely be repurposed but that would be someone else's decision not IFD. At 99 years old, station 32 is the oldest in the IFD fleet and has multiple structural issues that need attention.
Chief Malone stated back in 2015 and 2016 to both the BRVA and the Butler Tarkington associations that his intent is to consolidate former station 16 (closed) with 32's and build a larger, more modern station that will continue to serve that area and provide additional resources that the current space just cannot accommodate. He has been working with the city since 2015 to find available property in that area. . . that meets or exceeds our current response times and also meets or exceeds the NFPA standard.
Obviously, since 2015-2016, the councilors and association leaderships have changed so you may have not realized that the prior discussions occurred. Chief Malone is happy to attend either or both association meetings and re-address the need for a new IFD Station 32 and finding the right location to place it. As part of the overall capital improvement plan, $7.5 million has been allocated for this project. Chief Malone's intent is that the interior floor plan will be similar to what Station 3 located in Fountain Square looks like. The outside of the structure will be aesthetically coordinated with the actual location on which it sits and community input is always welcome.
