Buzzing Around Town - by Nora Spitznogle

Buzzing Around Town

Happy Springtime, lovelies! The snow should be melted by the time you're reading this. I'm almost out of mourning over my beloved Boilermakers losing in the NCAA men's basketball tournament - I hung my Purdue flag at half-mast for a few days. I've now turned my sights towards Record Store Day. Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 21. The next column will have the local lowdown.

St. Vincent de Paul Society Spring Boutique
Saturday, April 7, 2018
Riviera Club
5640 N. Illinois St - all-ages, free, 9 am - 2 pm
Do a little shopping - vendors will be donating a portion of their sales to the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry - have lunch, a cocktail, and donate blood. What more could you ask for on a Saturday?
The event is free, please bring non-perishable food items for the pantry. There will also be a cash bar and lunch will be available for purchase. If you'd like to donate blood that day, visit the Indiana Blood Center's website to sign up for a donation time.

This is a cool idea! The evening will start with a Nashville-style songwriters round. Chris Wolf, Cari Ray, and Steve Fulton will trade songs and stories to kick off what is sure to be an entertaining evening. An open stage (open mic) show will follow that.
Signups for the open stage start at 6:00. Each musician will have the chance to play one or two original songs. What a great way to get to hear some of your favorite musicians and discover new ones.

Charlie Ballantine: Life is Brief album release
Saturday, April 14, 2018
The Jazz Kitchen
5377 N. College Ave - 21+, two shows 7:30 & 9:30, $15 - 25
How lucky are we that we've gotten to see Charlie Ballantine grow up both literally and musically? Charlie is releasing his newest record, Life is Brief, a tribute album to Bob Dylan. The record is a compilation of instrumental renditions of Dylan songs. Joining Charlie for the show will be the terrific lineup including Jesse Wittman, Amanda Gardier, Chris Parker, Rob Dixon, and other special guests.
In case you're not familiar with the talented Charlie, he was named Indianapolis' "Best Jazz Musician" of 2015 by NUVO newsweekly and regularly performs around the Midwest. He holds a degree in jazz studies from Indiana University and his musical repertoire includes rock, tango, funk, atmospheric instrumental pop and blues.
Go see him....you won't be disappointed.

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
