Buzzing Around Town - by Nora Spitznogle

Buzzing Around Town

I hope you're all enjoying the good cheer of the holidays. I went a little crazy decorating my yard and porch this year. I'm turning into that neighbor. Not only do I have the big-bulb lights strung across the top of the house, I've added a 1950s era blow mold Santa to the lawn and a lit tree and a mannequin dressed as Santa on the porch. It's a little over the top...in a good way. Whatever you do to celebrate and decorate, I hope it is fun and stress-free. See you next year!

Cari Ray
Saturday, December 16, 2017
Aristocrat
5212 N. College Ave
all-ages, free, 9 - 11 pm
Cari Ray is one of my favorite singer-songwriters. She's got just the right about of twang - don't let that cowboy hat scare you. She's an excellent storyteller, songwriter, and guitar player. Take a break from the holiday bustle and relax and hear some kickass music - this is a great opportunity to see her in a smaller venue. I'm hoping to sneak over for a minute from my Red Key shift (shhh).

Christmas Carol Singalong
Monday, December 18, 2017 (6:30 - 9 pm)
Sunday, December 24, 2017 (5:30 - 7 pm)
Red Key Tavern
5170 N. College Ave - 21+, free
Did you know there is a piano at the Red Key - and it's in tune? The Settle family is quite musical and spontaneous singalongs have been known to break out over the holidays. This is your chance to join in - or just enjoy the music while partaking in Red Key cheer.
Hang up your coat, don't move the tables or block the aisles (seriously, at what other restaurants do you start moving the furniture?), bring cash (there is an ATM) and have a lovely time.

NYE at the Vogue - 40th Anniversary
Sunday, December 31, 2017
The Vogue
6259 N. College Ave
21+, $10 general admission, $100 VIP balcony open bar, 9 pm - 3 am
Did you know that The Vogue opened 40 years ago on New Year's Eve? They have an awesome party planned to celebrate including:
DJ Marcus playing the hits, largest cash balloon drop in The Vogue history, live dancers and performers, drink specials from each decade (I wonder if the 80s special will include Midori?), pyrotechnics and laser show, party favors and champagne toast.
What a fun and festive way to bring in the 40th anniversary year of The Vogue and the new year!
Midnight in London - NYE for the kiddos
Sunday, December 31, 2017
Aristocrat
5212 N. College Ave - all-ages, free, 5-7 pm
A New Year's Eve party for the children! There will be activities and a complimentary dessert and fruit buffet. Balloon drop at 7 pm - midnight in London.

Universal Hour of Peace with SongSquad
Sunday, December 31, 2017
Sacred Path Universal Unitarian Church
1818 W. 57th Street - all-ages, free, 11:30 pm - 12:30 am
If you'd like something a little more low key to ring in the New Year, this is right up your alley. Join other folks celebrating the universal hour of peace with contemplation, connection, and song. They'll be celebrating with joyful, creative, and an authentic expression of peace.

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
