Buzzing Around Town

Indy Folk Series 2017/2018 Season
Monthly Saturday concerts September 2017 - May 2018
615 W. 43rd Street - all-ages, 7 pm (doors 6:15),
presale tickets $15, at the door $20, season flex pass available, student and senior discounts available
This is the 17th year for this fantastic folk series (housed in the Unitarian Universalist Church). I especially love that the lineup includes some favorite performers at the late-great CATH coffeehouse - which closed 13 years ago in September.
They are kicking off the season with the New Augusta Bluegrass Band* on Saturday, September 30. The band has been playing together since three of them played together for a pick-up gig in 2008 and they haven't looked back. The core of the five member band - Dave Schroeder (guitar), Lisa Wagner Schroeder (upright bass), John Gates (mandolin), Brian Lappin (banjo), and Roger Banister (multiple instruments) - is bluegrass, and they stretch the traditional lines by dipping into jazz, traditional country, rock, and Celtic music. I always have a wonderful time at a New Augusta show!
Oct. 28, 2017: The Half Step Sisters
Nov. 25, 2017: Open Mic Night Benefit (pay what you will)
Dec. 16, 2017: Tim Grimm* & Krista Detor
Jan. 20, 2018: Moors & McCumber
Feb. 17, 2018: Edie Carey*
Mar. 10, 2018: Ben Bedford
Apr. 21, 2018: Annie & Rod Capps Band
May 12, 2018: Bill Staines
*Played at CATH coffeehouse.

Pints for Half-Pints
Friday, October 6, 2017
Speak Easy
5255 Winthrop Ave - 21+, 6 - 10 pm, $25, ($20 presale by 9/29)
The Broad Ripple Kiwanis Club is hosting their annual - and delicious - Pints for Half-Pints event. The proceeds are used to fund STEAM programs - Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math - at Midtown Indianapolis Schools.
Admission includes a souvenir pint glass (while supplies last) and one drink ticket. Additional beer tickets and food truck items will be sold separately at the event.
Fun fact: this is the Broad Ripple Kiwanis Club 30th anniversary. They were established in October of 1987 as an organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the lives of children in the Broad Ripple community. 100% of all proceeds goes back into the community. (So far over $58,000!)

Everett Greene
Sunday, October 8, 2017
The Jazz Kitchen
5377 N. College Ave - 21+, $12, doors 5 pm, show 6:30 pm
I have a huge musical crush on Mr. Greene. Even if you haven't seen him perform, you've probably heard his velvety voiceover work in commercials and documentaries. Mr. Greene has been performing for 70 years - do yourself a favor and see his show - he truly is one of the great voices in our city - you'll be glad you did.

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
