Buzzing Around Town

Happiest of New Years, gentle readers. I hope 2017 is full of music, laughter, and good cheer!

Andra Faye and Scott Ballantine
Friday, January 6 & Friday, January 20, 2017
Aristocrat Pub & Restaurant
5212 College Avenue - all-ages, free, 9 pm
If you haven't had the chance to hear the lovely and talented duo of Andra Faye and Scott Ballantine, you're missing out! They play a great mix of roots, jazz, blues, and country music. They weave their original songs through an eclectic catalog of standards and quirky cover tunes. Scott is one of the best guitar players in the city and Andra is known for her powerhouse vocalist and stringed instrument playing. She has graced the cover of Mandolin Magazine, who named her "First Lady of the Blues Mandolin."
The Aristocrat will be serving their well-loved menu and extensive beer selection.

Union Suit Rally, Pretty Bird, Bastard Hounds
Saturday, January 7, 2017
Birdy's Live
2131 E. 71st Street - 21+, $, 7 pm
I've been listening to songs from all three bands - this show promises to rock! Think power-pop, blues, and the good kind of country music. Start your new year out with great straight-forward music.

Otis Gibbs with Amy Lashley
Friday, January 20, 2017
HiFi - 1043 Virginia Avenue
21+, $13 pre-sale, $15 night of, doors 7, show 8 pm
I can't tell you how excited I am about this show! Both Otis Gibbs and Amy Lashley have brand-spankin' new albums out - which are both wonderful, by the way - and are on a mini-tour. Otis tours the world over, but it's a rare treat to get to see Amy on-stage.
Otis and Amy moved from their Broad Ripple home to South Nashville, TN nine years ago and we sure do miss 'em.
Otis's latest record, "Mount Renraw," was recorded in their living room on his 50th birthday. The album is everything we've come to expect from Otis. Honest songs about quirky places and long-lost history. Amy's "Daredevils, Strugglers, and Daydreamers," features her beautiful voice and outstanding storytelling.
This will be HiFi's first show in their expanded space - what a great way to kick it off!

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
