RAIN and REFRESH

Staying hydrated was a cinch at this year's Vintage Indiana Wine and Food Festival (www.vintageindiana.com). Wine lovers simply had to duck out from under their umbrellas as rain clouds played peek-a-boo all day culminating in a TORRENTIAL downpour just as local group Living Proof was leaving the stage, and fan favorite, Jenny DeVoe was about to perform. Despite the soggy forecast, thousands of people sipped and sampled wines from 26 of the state's 60 some wineries. Many of those pouring this year have only been in business for a few years making them the perfect fit for Vintage Indiana giving people the chance to try something NEW.
It was my 17th year hosting the Wine and Food Experience Pavilion where we cooked delicious dishes featuring Indiana dairy and turkey products, and matched them with Indiana wines.
Curry Turkey Salad was light and refreshing and paired perfectly with a glass of off dry vignoles or traminette. Cajun Mac and Cheese was creamy, rich and spicy. A great dish with a glass of Indiana rhubarb wine. Get the recipes at www.momschooseturkey.com and www.WinnersDrinkMilk.com
Last issue I talked briefly about canned wines. Some Indiana wineries are getting in on the game, as are many of the big producers. It's a fun, affordable way to pack your cooler for an outdoor concert, boat ride or just casual deck drinking. I can't wait to pull the tab on the new Barefoot Refresh Spritzers. They come in red or white, with a touch of spritz. Drink them chilled, over ice, or as a base for a sangria or wine cocktail. $9 for a 4 pack
By the way, I got a tip that the featured sandwich at the famed Dairy Bar at the Indiana State Fair this year will be a Smokin' Hot Grilled Cheese featuring spicy pepper cheese, smoked cheese and a splash of sriracha on marble rye bread. Those Barefoot Refresh Spritzers would pair nicely.
