Slaughterhouse 5 Day
Saturday, February 13, 2016
Zion Evangelical United Church of Christ
603 N New Jersey Street - $5, 7 - 10 PM
Slaughterhouse 5 Day will honor Kurt Vonnegut's novel by the same name. The evening will feature readings from the novel, live art making, music from the Indianapolis-based band Kilgore Trout, and Vonnegut-related improv comedy from Chicago's Under the Gun Theater.
Organized by Evoke Arts and Media, this is the second year for the event. This year will mark the 71st anniversary of the massive and complete firebombing of Nazi-held Dresden, Germany by Allied forces during the waning months of World War II. Indianapolis native and now legendary author Kurt Vonnegut was a prisoner of war in Dresden during the bombing, and his experiences on that day are the basis of his most famous book, Slaughterhouse 5.
Slaughterhouse 5 was published in 1969 and has been ranked as one of the greatest books of the 20th century. The novel, zany, humorous, and tragic, often at the same time, touches on many themes and has been called the greatest book ever written about post-traumatic stress syndrome. Vonnegut died in 2007.

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
