Pressing Palms For Jazz Singers

Below are two poems for jazz singers. Al Jarreau and Billie Holiday have, at times, brought out the worshipful in me.

seeing al jarreau
circa 1987
u.s. tennis courts

he namasteed
his way off the stage
and bowed deeply
at our exit -
the holy man
(the first i had seen)
had just
passed below us

when she sings

sometimes
when she sings
i press my palms together
in automatic reverence

i would have to
call this
worshiping
at the temple
of billie holiday
