Sabbatical's Thank You and Farewell Show featuring TimeSlip and Kilgore Trout
Saturday, July 11, 2015
Sabbatical
921 Broad Ripple Ave - 21+, doors at 1 PM, music at 8 PM
You may have heard that the folks at Sabbatical have lost their lease and that this will be their last weekend - there is a music showcase on Friday night and comedy on Sunday night as well.
I can't tell you how much I appreciate David Quiesser and Kevin Phillips for encouraging new bands and bringing musicians to town that might have to skip Indianapolis for the lack of an appropriately sized venue and a great place for all of us fans to enjoy (not to mention the tasty beverages and delicious food).
They say it best, "This will be the last musical show that we will ever be hosting. From The Hideaway On Hillside to Locals Only to Sabbatical, it has been an unbelievable journey and MANY friends were made during said journey. Many romantic relationships met at our locales and many fantastic bands and artists got their starts as well. We have had the privilege of growing (up) with many of you. Although we have lost our asses attempting these ventures, we wouldn't trade it for the world. You will be missed so please come in and say hi, bye, give thanks, receive thanks and share a tear and a beer. We love the artists of this community."
They will open at 1:00 and the music is scheduled to start at 8:00. Be sure to swing in and let them know how much you appreciate them and enjoy that awesome deck view one more time.

Jazz on Canvas, an evening to benefit Indy Jazz Fest 2015
Sunday, July 19, 2015
The Jazz Kitchen
5377 N. College Ave - 21+, $125, 5 - 8 PM
Jazz On Canvas is a collaborative art show and live concert featuring some of our city's wonderful visual artists and best jazz composers and performers. Watch the paintings come to life with original compositions inspired by the art.
The Artists: Constance Edwards Scopelitis, Chris Pyle, Greg Huebner, Mark Sheldon, Rita Spalding, Jay Parnell, Kyle Ragsdale, and Shawn Causey
The Musicians: Steve Allee, Rob Dixon, Kenny Phelps, and Nick Tucker.
The evening is a fundraiser for the Indy Jazz Fest. Your participation and contribution directly impacts the festival's reach, makes local jazz performances possible, keeps our rich jazz legacy alive, and funds the educational programs.
Artists will be on hand to describe their works. Musicians will show how the art inspired their original compositions. A great insight into the creative process.
A big chunk of the proceeds raised from art and photography sales will be donated to Indy Jazz Fest to help with our important community projects - of course, additional contributions will be gladly accepted.
The ticket price includes complementary wine, beer and delicious hors d'oeuvres. Dessert will be served during the performance.

Movies on the Lawn
Thursdays, now through September 10, 2015
Hotel Broad Ripple
6520 Westfield Blvd - all-ages, free, movies start at sundown
I joined a group of friends at the Thursday night movie at the Hotel Broad Ripple last week and I had a blast - and not just because the film was Independence Day. The Hotel offers a delicious menu of their wines, either by the glass or bottle, beers, and big-enough-to-share-with-the-group hors d'oeuvre platters. There are tables and chairs, but you might want to bring a blanket just in case and it will come in handy if you get chilly.

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
