Camden's Stained Glass could resemble a wing of the Indianapolis Museum of Art. President and Art Director Brook Camden recently reflected on his career.

"I went to school for graphic design in Dayton, Ohio and ended up designing stained glass for a company there. I got in a position where I was designing and building for that company for a few years. Basically, I grew up in Kokomo and wanted to move closer to home. I knew about Fox Stained Glass Studios and their reputation and finally ended up getting a job there and managed their studio for the past ten years. Then I went out on my own following the retirement of Clare Fox," he explained.
He practices his craft in about 3,000 square feet of space at 5345 Winthrop Avenue, Suite C near the Monon Trail. "Everything here is custom built for this space. The hard part was trying to make a living while renovating the space. It took us almost a year to complete the showroom. Now I can focus on running the business," he said.

Camden Stained Glass Studio's recent new projects and restorations appear in a variety of local spaces such as Congregation Beth-El Zedeck, St. Vincent Hospital Anderson, Our Lady of Greenwood, St. Richard's School, Old National Center and St. Vincent Women's Center in Carmel. Other works he managed under the Fox Studios name include St. Christopher Episcopal Church, St. Gabriel Archangel Catholic Church, St. Paul Episcopal Church, Holy Cross Cathedral, Carmel Christian Church, St. Roch Catholic Church and St. Anne Catholic Church in addition to Crown Hill Cemetery and the Navy Pier Museum in Chicago. They have also done residential work for many private homes. A monochrome front door motif along with a front door shield design are distinct entry features of their shop. Customers literally open a door displaying the unique talents of Camden and his staff when visiting.

Camden mentioned how his work takes shape, "It starts with a concept, when somebody comes to me with an idea. We do a scale drawing with color and an artistic rendering based on our discussion. At this point, we decide on what kind of glass we're going to use and the different colors and textures available to create a finished product. Once the window is cut, we tape everything up to make sure we are happy with the glass selection, then the building process begins."
Camden Stained Glass address embraces historical significance. "Everybody knows Broad Ripple is a hard place to find a large space. I had looked for a place for about six months. We needed a workshop and a storefront and ended up in the exact location where Fox Stained Glass Studio was located about 30 years ago. The odds of this happening are incredible. We transferred everything down here from Fox Studios and Clare (Fox) is still involved behind the scenes with the studio. We've worked together for years and it's been a fluid transition. I try to put every style of window that could cater to a client in the shop. Our services include custom design for religious, commercial and residential spaces along with minor repairs and glass etching. Everything we do is custom made," he noted.
"The most rewarding thing about my work is seeing the finished product and seeing the expression on people's faces as they see it. We may work on something for two or three months and install it in one day. Everything that we've worked on comes to life. I look forward to continue using my knowledge and expertise in stained glass to help preserve and create history," he concluded.
Camden Stained Glass hours are 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and by appointment. Inquiries can be answered at 426-5427. Details of their current projects and past work can be seen at their Facebook page: 5
