News from the Farmer's Market: The Originals
This column we celebrate some original founding vendors at the Broad Ripple Farmers Market back in 1996. Six farmers set up shop that summer in the Broad Ripple Brewpub parking lot:

Lee's Orchard features peaches and pears this week
Joshua Lee is an original Farmers Market vendor. The Columbus-based farmer is featuring Red Haven peaches this week as well as the Canadian Harmony variety. Last year was a better year for peaches, he noted. The cold weather this year made it a tough year for peaches this season. He also grows and sells small potatoes and dessert pears (stark delicious and another variety).
Cassie Anderson is now engaged to Joshua. She tells Round the Ripple that she had to "eat her weight in apples" at the Market in order to get asked out by him. It worked and they will be married this fall. It's a Broad Ripple romance, Market style.
You can read all about the orchard including the history at www.leesorchard.com.

Earthly Delights has great vegetables
Liz Chapman of Earthly Delights is another Market pioneer. She too has been at the Market since 1996. She sells vegetables at the market.
Like peaches, tomatoes have been a challenge this summer. Some like it hot! But the cool summer has hurt the tomato crop. They are not ripening fast enough. Tomatoes like hot nights, too.

Daily Blossom has had flowers and plants since day one
Flower seller Nancy Barton also has been at the Market since 1996. She sells cut and potted flowers and plants at the Market. Her stand started in 1995 at the Rocky Ripple Farmers Market and then moved to the Brewpub (with John Hill). From 1996 to today, she has been selling flowers at the market.

Speaking of movies, the Hotel Broad Ripple has been having outdoor movies Thursday night at dusk as well. On July 31, 2014, they showed When Harry Met Sally and the week before was Hoosiers. I'll have what she's having. 😄

Holliday Park news
Don't miss Maren Bell's Meditations on Beauty and Nature at Holliday Park through September 7, 2014. Garden work days for volunteers are scheduled for August 23 and 27. Finally, the prairie wildflowers are in full bloom at the park entrance. Don't miss them including my favorite, lobelia (cardinal flower).

Labor Day run back to evening start time
Don't miss the annual Ripple Effect Run/Walk which returns this year to its original evening hours (7 p.m. start time) on Sunday August 31, 2014. It starts at Broad Ripple Station shopping center on Broad Ripple Avenue. Registration is $20 ($25 day of the race). Register at www.tuxbro.com, the website of the Tuxedo Brothers. A street party follows the run/walk. See you there.

Tributes: Broad Ripple Park dance teacher
According to Park officials, Johanna Bruyn, a 13-year Broad Ripple Park ballet instructor, has passed away. A tribute is planned in The Star and a room at the Park may be named after her. Writing in Sky Blue Window, Kristen Eamon-Shine notes she was "a cultural superstar among families of Indianapolis' Northside. She taught dance for decades, including classes at Broad Ripple Park, the Jordan YMCA and Broad Ripple High School."
