I interviewed Jay Farrar (via telephone) in March and didn't faint. Victory for me. I've been a big fan of Jay's music since his Uncle Tupelo days and first saw Son Volt at The Vogue in September 1997. I was interviewing him for the magazine, Ghettoblaster, about Son Volt's newest record, Honky Talk. I'm really enjoying the record and I'm sure the live show will be terrific. The Vogue show will be just the ninth on Son Volt's aggressive 47 show tour. You should go.
I broke the first rule of interviewing when I was speaking to Jay - I talked about me and my love of his music and his concerts I've seen. He was lovely enough to tell me that he was looking forward to playing at The Vogue again (the last time Son Volt played the venue was 2005) and being in Indianapolis.

It is always good to laugh! The very funny Rebecca Corry will be at Crackers on Broad Ripple Avenue for a good cause. School On Wheels works with homeless children by providing tutoring in shelters and after school programs, advocating for their educational opportunities, and providing school uniforms and supplies. All of the proceeds of the evening will be donated to School On Wheels.
I hadn't been to a comedy club for decades and recently saw a show at Crackers. Now I wonder why it took so long to get back! Laugher is good for the soul - and for School On Wheels.

Many of you know Jude Odell and don't realize it. She is truly multi-talented; I'm overwhelmed trying to figure out how to describe her. Jude's figurative clay work has won awards at juried art shows and museum events. She has provided children's art programming since 1978 and has been with the Indianapolis Art Center since 1992. Jude has worked with thousands of children and has shepherded young artists in creating vibrant public art and mural projects from Saint Joan of Arc School to Huehuetenango, Guatemala. I know Jude best through music and I consider her one of Indiana's musical treasures. She is a genius at recalling traditional mountain and country songs. And she's good enough to teach the likes of me.
A wonderful group, calling themselves Friends of Jude have organized this event to help Jude with her expenses so she can concentrate on her health and recovery from her surgery earlier this year and ongoing treatments.
It has been pert-near two years since Alice Chalmers and The Stick a Cork in Your Jug Band has taken the stage. I'm excited to dust off my cowboy boots, fluff my crinoline, and put new ribbon in my Smith-Corona for Jude Fest. You read that correctly - I play the typewriter. As you might guess, the band features interesting instrumentation. In addition to the typewriter, you'll be treated to Tammy Lieber playing washtub bass, Stasia Demos playing accordion, Holly Smith Garrett playing violin, Joni Back-Bubenzer playing ukulele, and Jude Odell herself playing banjo and guitar. The fun and traditional songs we play lend themselves perfectly to the beautiful voices of everyone (but me - can't sing a lick).
ACATSACIYJB is only one of the seventeen bands playing. Not only will the day be packed with music but there will be food and drinks available for purchase, a silent auction, and good old fun and conversation. As I was typing the lineup it occurred to me that some of the nicest, most talented people that I know are playing. It will be fun to have all of that goodness in one place! I'll see you there.

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere.
