Buzzing Around Town

Randy King
Saturday, January 19, 2013
Big Mike's Café Americana
9611 N. College Avenue - 7:30 pm, all-ages
You might remember Randy King from playing with his band, The Positions, at Crazy Al's on College Ave back in the "skinny tie" days of the early 1980s. Or you may have seen him more recently playing as Randy King and The New Positions. Randy is a great songwriter - smart wordplay and fun music.
This will be a rare chance to see Randy play a solo set. He is promising to play a bunch of songs that he likes but never had the guts to do, and a healthy dose of his own songs. You won't want to miss this. And you can eat delicious pizza while you're hanging out with the cool kids.

Outta Luck Potluck:
A Neighborhood Party for Anyone That May Be Down on Their Luck
Monday, January 21, 2013 (MLK Jr. Day)
The Melody Inn Reception Hall
3822 N. Illinois St - 4 pm
The Melody Inn is hosting an "Outta Luck Potluck." Their goal is to share a hot meal with anyone that may be hungry, warm clothes with anyone that may be cold, and good company for anyone that may be lonely. They're doing this with the help of generous music community and neighbors.
Here is how you can participate: Drop off donations at The Melody Inn during regular business hours: Tuesday-Friday: 4:30pm-3:00am, Saturday 9:00pm-3:00am, Sunday 8:00pm-3:00am.
Suggested items are non-perishable foods (canned veggies, chili, ravioli, peanut butter, and pasta), drinks (water, juice), gently used clothing (coats, sweatshirts, sweaters, scarves, gloves, shoes, blankets - infants, kids, and adults), and paper goods (plates, napkins, t.p.).
You are also welcome to bring a prepared dish to the potluck dinner. E-mail outtaluckpotluck@gmail.com to let them know what you will be bringing, and they will send you details about where and when to drop it off.
Please spread the word to anyone that you think would appreciate the meal and could use help with food and clothing - and spending time with the generous Melody Inn community.

Souper Bowl
Saturday, January 26, 2013
Second Helpings
1121 Southeastern Ave - 11:30 am - 2:00 pm, all-ages, $5 (5 years-old and under free)
Full disclosure - I'm lucky enough to be the Director of Programs for the amazing nonprofit agency, Second Helpings. We're showing off our wonderful facility, showing off local ceramic artists and talented chefs.
When a group of chefs gather, they enjoy showing off their creativity to each other and we all benefit! Fifteen chefs are participating, including Broad Ripple favorites: Chef Huckaby of Barto's Catering, Chef Greg Hardesty of Recess, Chef Anass Sentissi of Saffron Café, Chef Miguel Cordero of Northside Social, and Chef Eddie Sahm of Sahm's Place.
Handmade ceramic bowls will be available for purchase, created and designed by local artists including Corey Jefferson, Kailtyn Fox, Chef Liz Gimenez, and Soyong Partington.
The ticket price includes samples of five soups - you can purchase tickets for more soup samples. Take-home quarts of soup will be available also. Tickets are available online at www.secondhelpings.org or at the door.
If you'd like to donate food products, we love spices! The volunteers prepare 3200 meals every single day all with donated food - and some of meals are sent to agencies in our neighborhood - Kaleidoscope Youth Center, MLK Center, and Visions Childcare. Our favorite spices are rosemary, thyme, basil, paprika, and onion and garlic powder.

Spirtles Family Reunion
Saturday, January 26, 2013
Historic Irving Theatre
5505 E. Washington St - Doors 6 pm, show 7, all-ages, $10
The Spirtles started in 1978 as four friends that enjoyed playing and were influenced by the Grateful Dead and psychedelic music. They infused their own material and grew quite a following, both locally and across the country. The original line up; James Booth, Rick Freeman, Joseph Huber, and Tim Cooper were joined by other musicians over the years as the band grew, including Greg Ziesmer.
The Spirtles have not played together for a decade. James Booth is visiting from his home in Wyoming and the time is right for a reunion show. And quite a show it will be - there will be beer and wine available (don't forget your ID) and food vendors. The lineup is:
7:00 - Joseph Huber and Jim Callahan
Next - Greg Ziesmer and Kriss Luckett
And then - James Booth and Rick Freeman will kick off the show, and will be joined by the rest of the Spirtles.
This promises to be a fun and twirly-dancy evening.

Naptown Rock Radio Wars
Book Release Party and Film Screening
Saturday, January 26, 2013

Book Release Party: Smee's Place Bar & Grill
1454 W 86th Street
4:00 - 7:00, all-ages
Rock Radio Wars, the film about rock and roll and the airwaves in Indianapolis now has a companion book. The old WIBC 1070-AM, the king of the airwaves in Indy in the 50's and home to Bouncin' Bill Baker, was knocked off its perch by the small wattage Top 40 WIFE 1310 AM. Fairbanks Broadcasting, owners of WIBC, came after WIFE with its "underground rock" WNAP 93.1. It was a war, and this is the story.
Numerous legends of Indianapolis radio, live and in person, will provide complimentary autographs for your copy of the book.
Scheduled to appear:
Cris Conner WNAP, Reb Porter WIFE, Al Stone WNAP, Bill Shirk WXLW, Jimmy Mack WISH, Freddie Fever WNAP, Allen Deck, Scott Wheeler WIFE/WNDE, Mike O'Brien WIFE/WNDE, "Big Kahouna" WIFE, and Art Baker WIBC

Naptown Rock Radio Wars Film Screening
Movie Buff Theater (formerly Loew's and Sony Theaters)
3535 West 86th Street
6:30 PM, all-ages, $8
This will be the theatrical premiere of Version 3 of the film chronicling the rock and roll wars in Indianapolis. This is your chance to see it locally before it travels to film festivals across the globe. This showing of the film will be dedicated to the memory of "Big" John Gillis who 'signed off' for the last time in November.

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
