Bulk up that Bank Account
Hello readers! If you are a regular reader, certainly you are aware that I love to share all of the vast reasons why exercise is so good for you both mentally and physically. But there is another reason why being active can improve your quality of life... It can make your wallet FATTER. Yep, researchers have found that regular exercisers (3 or more times per week) can earn up to 9% more income than those who do not; and obviously that is not a small chunk of change. So, why is this exactly the case? For years, there has been a correlation between physical activity and income but the jury is still out on an established cause and effect. A study out of Cleveland State University authored by Vasilis Kosteas, Ph.D. profiled the traits of regular to avid exercisers, and the traits of their counterparts and found this significant difference in average income levels. That finding holds regardless of BMI, meaning how fit you look doesn't seem to play a factor. Even occasional exercise provided an income boost: People who work out just one to three times per month make roughly 5 percent more than those who stay seated, the study says. This sort of finding isn't completely new. Previous studies have shown very similar things, but it's often been difficult to determine whether there's true causation.
There are several theories as to what correlations lead to the increased income levels. Citing others studies regarding the benefits of regular exercise: increased intelligence, positive attitude, and higher energy levels, Kosteas suggests that these factors in turn can raise a person's productivity, leading to higher earnings. Basically, you feel better and work better when you exercise, and that translates to a larger paycheck. It could simply be that those who regularly exercise also are more disciplined at work, and strive to grow and reach and/or exceed goals. Physical fitness often brings on a sense of accomplishment and confidence which could lead to job advancement, networking and new opportunities. So, what are you waiting for? If your health or vanity aren't enough to convince you to get going, maybe your greed can! Turn off that TV, get in gear and earn more dead presidents!!
