Global Beatles Day
Monday, June 25, 2012
This is the fourth year that Global Beatles Day has been celebrated thanks to Faith Cohen. She was kind enough to share how her life-long love of the Beatles inspired the celebration. Faith said, "I got the idea from all of the seemingly worthless days on the calendar- 'sweetheart's day,' and 'talk like a pirate day.' And I thought, the Beatles did so much for the world, musically, culturally, socially, spiritually - I agree with Kurt Vonnegut, who said it beautifully - 'I say in speeches that a plausible mission of artists is to make people appreciate being alive at least a little bit. I am then asked if I know of any artists who pulled that off. I reply, 'The Beatles did.'
"So my feeling was, why isn't there a GLOBAL holiday celebrating them? I chose June 25th as the day, because on that day in 1967 was the first Global Satellite transmission EVER and the Beatles were at the epicenter with their live performance of "All you need is Love". You can see the video on YouTube and on our Web site (globalbeatlesday.com)."
When Faith shares the idea of GBD, "usually people say, 'that's a great idea. The world needs Global Beatles Day! There absolutely should be one.' So, every year, I just keep plugging away at it. There is no money to be made, no silly tribute band concerts, no obligation of any kind, but just to have the chance to recognize and thank the Beatles."
Follow Faith's lead and listen to some Beatles music. Imagine the context of the music in the time it was born, and then listen to it with new ears. It really is amazing.

Let FREEDOM Ring: from Justice to Jazz
Friday, June 29, 2012
Indiana Landmarks Center
1201 Central Avenue - 7:00 pm, free, all ages
Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, honors African American heritage by commemorating the announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas in 1865. As part of the National Juneteenth Observance Foundation's annual convention, the country's jazz giants will join their Hoosier counterparts at the Indiana Landmarks Center.
The African American Jazz Caucus presents the 2012 "Let FREEDOM Ring: from Justice to Jazz" Awards at the Indiana Landmarks Center. This year's Jazz Masters Award will honor Melvin Rhyne (jazz organist and original member of Wes Montgomery Trio), Frank Smith (bassist, composer has performed with Dizzy Gillespie, Michel LeGrande), and Benny Barth (drummer with Duke Ellington and member of the MasterSounds).
The inaugural Spirit of Freedom Awards will honor Mari Evans (author, composer, and educator), Gilbert Homes (U.S. Army Officer and business executive), and Thomas Norman DeWolf (public speaker and author).
Visit www.indyjuneteenth.com for information on family activities and parade on June 30, 2012.

Soul Bus
Monday, July 2, 2012
Apres Jack's (Daddy Jack's)
9419 N. Meridian Street - 8:00 pm, free, 21+
Soul Bus is turning 10 years old. And I contend that band years are like dog years. Soul Bus is 70 by my count. The band is made up of some of Indianapolis' best musicians: David Murray, Jeff Chapin, Jes Richmond, Tad Robinson, and Gordon Bonham.
Soul Bus has played a decade of Monday nights at Daddy Jack's, covering blues, rock, folk, and original music. The band says, for them, the real celebration will be in honor of their fans. "Thanks to you, we've outlasted The Beatles, which has always been our main goal."
Not only is seeing the band the best deal in Indianapolis - and not just because it's free - they are all amazing musicians and the music is always excellent.

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
