"We are a scooter-based designated driver service that is based in Broad Ripple. We drive our scooter to the client's car, fold it up and put it in the trunk, then drive the customer home in their own car," explained Holmes, who co-owns Moxi Rides with Ms. Pierse. "We have pictures and a video available soon at http://www.facebook.com/MoxiRides and we are also on Twitter @moxirides," he added.
These young entrepreneurs are successfully navigating a growing trend in transportation.
"We heard about the idea and how popular it has become in Europe as well as other cities around the United States. We thought that the idea would be a perfect fit for the Broad Ripple area. So after doing extensive research on other companies that are similar or do the same thing, we decided it would be feasible to take on the challenge. As far as the geographic area, we are focusing our attention mainly on Broad Ripple. However, our drivers will take clients to wherever they would like to go in the greater Indianapolis area," Ms. Pierse mentioned.
"In the past few months, it's been catching on the United States. We've seen many companies like ours pop up in other cities around the country, but none in Indianapolis. We thought that we could bring something new to our city. Due to Indiana weather, though, we close from November to March. However, it works out well because Broad Ripple is much busier in the summer time," Holmes emphasized.
"We are open until an hour after the bars close and are closed on Mondays. We even get calls on our days off for a ride. Things are definitely on the upswing for us," Ms. Pierse noted.
Moxi Rides' hours of operation are 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. Thursday through Saturday and 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Sunday. They are closed Monday. Rates for their rides and frequently asked questions can be found at: www.moxirides.com or by calling (317) 753-6515. Their name is taken from a combination of Moped and Taxi.
They have six lightweight and fuel-efficient Di Blasi scooters that are manufactured in Italy which weigh 64.6 pounds without gas. With gas, they weigh about 70 pounds and can get about 100 miles per gallon. Four scooters are 2010 models and two scooters are 1996 models. Their bright orange color (like the Broad Ripple High School Rockets' logo) is safety oriented and is distinctively noticeable when in motion or parked.
"Thursday, Friday and Saturday, potential clients can see us out on the street in Broad Ripple where they can catch a ride, just like getting a cab. It saves them a lot of hassle. Most of the people that use our services would take a cab, anyway. We're providing a service to help out the community. Text or call us (at above phone number) or e-mail moxirides@gmail.com with any questions or if you need a ride home," Holmes said.
"It's rewarding that at the end of the week, when we've taken so many people home that didn't get behind the wheel when they easily could have. It's awesome that these people got home safely because of our company," he reflected.
Moxi Rides was originally formed in November and opened for the season in March. A Minneapolis native, Will's family moved to the Hoosier State when he was seven. He graduated from Lawrence Central High School and Indiana State University. Ms. Pierse was born and raised in Indianapolis. She graduated from Lawrence North High School and Ball State University.
By performing a valuable community service, Kylie Pierse, Will Holmes and their staff get drivers and their cars home safely and save potentially countless lives in and beyond the Broad Ripple area.
