Rubber ducks race to celebrate BR 175th - By Bob Schmidt

Broad Ripple celebrated its 175th Birthday in grand style this past weekend. On Saturday, a duck race on the canal brought cheers and laughter to participants young and old. Broad Ripple Village Association president Mark Wolf and WTTS-FM announcer Brad Holtz explained the route and race. Then the large "pace duck" several large containers of rubber duckies were tossed into the canal from the Monon Bridge. A brisk current carried the ducks down the canal in a few minutes. A basket lowered into the river retrieved the leading group of ducks, from which a random drawing of first, second, and third place provided the winning ducks.
Indianapolis Fire Department's water rescue squad stretched a firehose inflated with air across the canal and captured the ducks. One determined duck (#569) escaped, but the runaway was grabbed downstream by Jake Johnston, who happily returned it to the IFD collection point. A few recalcitrant ducks became caught in an eddy underneath the Rainbow Bridge, but were eventually brought back into the fold by careful use of the hose.
On Sunday, April 22, 2012 a Birthday Party was held at the Indianapolis Art Center. Free cake and ice-cream sweetened the day for those in attendance. The cake treats were provided by Parcha Sweets and the ice-cream was provided by Broad Ripple Ice Cream Station (BRICS). Despite a chilly day, the ice-cream was a tremendous success, keeping the cheerful BRICS volunteers working very hard all day.
A string quartet from Broad Ripple High School provided musical entertainment, despite gusty winds that kept trying to carry away their music. A surprise a capella rendition of Happy Birthday delighted the visitors streaming through the Art Center during the celebration.
Indianapolis Deputy Mayor Michael Huber presented a proclamation declaring April 22 as "Broad Ripple Village Day" from Mayor Ballard. The certificate was received by BRVA President Mark Wolf at a podium in front of some unique art in the Indianapolis Art Center.
Winners of the door prizes and the first, second, and third place winners of the Photo Scavenger Hunt were announced. The winning team was the entry with the unusual name "John Stamos is our Dad" (despite their assurance that he really is not their Dad). Beth Baughn and Nicole Todd accepted the award. They noted that Becky Schaefer was the third member of their team. They had spent about 8 hours chasing down the clues in the scavenger hunt.
