Poetic Thoughts - Local Jazz Summer - by C.W. Pruitt II

Local Jazz Summer (from 2010)
This Summer was another great one in Broad Ripple for jazz fans like me. I attended the last 4 sessions of "Jazz in the Park" at Broad Ripple Park and the Labor Day Street Fair at 54th and College. Both of these were excellent. At both you could bring your children and your dogs. Both of these were truly community events.
Babies were in attendance at the "Jazz in the Park" series in Broad Ripple Park. Small children played in the sand and danced on the grass as the music played. The dogs also seemed to enjoy the jazz. There was a lot of tail wagging going on.
Rob Dixon and Kate Lamont were my favorite park performers. Rob was as powerful as ever. Rob is a magnificent artist who does a ton of good work with the youth in this city. We are truly blessed to have Rob Dixon pouring his heart into Indianapolis.
I knew that Kate Lamont was a genius when she was still a teenager. Kate blew my mind back then. Now she gives my mind a massage which frees it to think higher thoughts. In Broad Ripple Park Lamont exhibited the compassion and humility which make Kate great. After the concert, I bought Kate's latest CD from her mother (who looks just like her.)
Labor Day has become one of my favorite days of the year. I can thank the Jazz Kitchen and YATS for putting the street fair on and supplying the superb food and entertainment. Once again, dogs and babies were in abundance on a beautiful day. Non-dogs and old-time humans also grooved on the scene at 54th and College.
