Healthy Holiday Tool Box!

It is extremely easy to let the holidays de-rail your health and fitness goals. Each and every one of us face daily challenges with the upcoming festivities between all of the rich and fatty foods, added shopping and cooking obligations, kids being out of school on Christmas break, and the chilly temperatures; not to mention the figure forgiving sweaters and coats! However it is so important to maintain some form of fitness activity during this time of year not only for the physical, but the vast mental benefits that it provides.
Although it seems very difficult to squeeze in exercise during this time, it needn't be as hard as it may seem. If you pinpoint down some key tips that work for you, you should be able to maintain or minimize the possible "holiday damage". Here are a few ideas that can aid in your holiday survival plan. . . hopefully you will find some that relate to you!
*If you have a trainer or coach, ask he or she to develop an in-home plan that you can complete in 20 or 30 minutes if you cannot make it to the gym. Even a 10 minute workout is better than nothing at all, and often times after 10 minutes you may realize how much more energy you have to go longer. There are HUNDREDS of challenging and effective exercises that you can do within the confines of your home. Just be sure that you know correct form as the professional will not be checking it!
*When at the mall, wear comfortable clothing and walk at a brisk pace during your shopping trips to add in small amounts of extra cardio while completing your errands. If you end with a bit of time to kill, put your packages in the car and go back in for a few more laps!
*Take advantage of the "nice" days. If you get the appropriate gear, you can exercise in cold weather. Add to the experience by visiting a lovely and scenic park. Some good examples are Eagle Creek, Holliday Park, and Ft. Benjamin Harrison. Once you get going you will be so glad that you stepped out the door. There is nothing like fresh crisp air on a sunny winter day.
*Start your day with a healthy, high fiber, and non-sugary breakfast. If you begin your day this way, you will be less likely to "ruin" it with poor choices, and your blood sugar will thank you for it.
*Realize that you may have a naughty day or two and forgive yourself when/if you do. We are only human so do not beat yourself up when you slip up. Instead, use it as a motivator to get in a great workout the next day!
*Investigate local activities that you can do to stay active. Example may include bowling, ice skating, indoor rock climbing, indoor water parks, and even old fashioned caroling! It is a great way to spend time with the family while getting in some exercise.
*Set realistic expectations for yourself. Maybe rather than planning to lose weight, focus on either maintaining or only gaining a mere pound or two. Also plan to not be hard on yourself if you do. You WILL take it off!
Although these all seem like obvious tips, many of us obviously don't follow them and are very unhappy with the weight gain and low energy we experience after the holidays are over. This sadly can lead to even less motivation and a downward spiral. Happy Holidays to all!!!
