Random Rippling - Day of the Dead at Art Center
posted: Nov. 12, 2010
The Indianapolis Art Center held their 11th annual Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) celebration on October 30, 2010. The art center was filled with shrines that serve "as a type of memorial dedicated to an individual or a group of people who have died. Like altars, they've become a way of telling stories about people, providing individuals another way to express and transform loss into an experience of beauty."
It was a day of reverence, food, and music, inside and out at the 67th and College Avenue center.
One interesting shrine, El Ultimo Adios by Salvador Jimenez-Flores, included neon, computer parts and a video screen. As seen below, the screen reveals the face of the "departed" and his feet protrude from the end of the casket.
