2010 Home tour to feature "The Castle" at Butler
by Alan Hague
posted: Nov. 12, 2010

The 2010 Midtown Holiday Home Tour, formerly the Crossroads Holiday Home Tour, will feature five homes on the North side of Indianapolis. The tour will take place Saturday, November 13 and Sunday, November 14, 2010, from 11 am to 5 pm both days.
This year a different kind of residence is on the tour. One for 40 young men. It is the Phi Delta Theta fraternity house at Butler University, located at 705 West Hampton Drive. The Phi Delt house, referred to as The Castle, was built in 1929 at a cost of around $55,000. The house recently received a $1.9 Million complete restoration which included green technologies which made it the first LEED-certified fraternity house in the state of Indiana.
The holiday decorating at the house is by David Strohmeyer of the Empty Vase, located at 49th and Pennsylvania Street. The Phi Delt collection of William Forsyth paintings are being hung for the tour.
For tour details, see below:
  • 4122 North Meridian Street (Home of Len Pelarski & Gaylon Melton) - Only two duplexes were built in the historic district: this home and the home to its north, both designed to house the Meyer clan. Today the renaissance revival home is one of the street's most elegant single-family dwellings. Floral design by Becky Ruby of Lilly Lane, 56th and Illinois Streets.
  • 4245 North Meridian Street (Home of Jeff & Lisa Worley) - One of the oldest in the historic district, this beautiful home was built in 1909. It has been beautifully updated for its contemporary owners with the help of decorator Matt Harris. Floral design by Jim Holland, freelance floral designer.
  • 4525 North Meridian Street (Home of Helen O'Guinn) - All the main-floor rooms in this colonial revival, built in 1925, were recently updated, including converting a trio of rooms in the back of the house into a single, spacious kitchen. Floral design by Angela Kenly and Janet Smithers of Bo Kay Florist, Kessler and Keystone Avenue.
  • 5659 North Illinois Street (Home of Jennifer Barratt) - This charming duplex, built in the fifties, has been decorated with a bohemian flair. Although the home is small, it contains many wonderful artworks by noted artists, friends of the owner. Floral design by the homeowner, Jennifer Barratt of the Arranger.
  • Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, 705 West Hampton Drive (on the Butler University campus) Completed in 1929, this Indiana limestone and North Carolina granite building is affectionately called "the castle." The residence underwent a $1.9 million renovation, completed last year, making it the first green-certified fraternity in the state. Floral design by David Strohmeyer of the Empty Vase, 49th and Pennsylvania Streets.
You can order tickets online at indyharmoni.org or at any featured home during the event. TICKETS $12 per person or $15 at the door. For more information indyharmoni.org
