Random Rippling - Glendale reading program boosted by patron
posted: May 28, 2010
Inspired by a desire to help young people learn, a Glendale-area library patron has contributed $1,000 to the Glendale Branch of the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library in support of its 2010 Summer Reading Program, "Read to Feed: Mind and Heart."
The generous donation by retiree and library volunteer Barbara Smith will allow the library staff to employ pages that are needed to help administer the program.
Smith says she overpaid her mortgage escrow account, so she received a few extra dollars from her state and federal income taxes. "What good is a few extra dollars if one can't do some good with them," said Smith, who subscribes to "Alice's Law of Compensatory Cashflow" from Calvin Trillin's Alice, Let's Eat. "A flat panel TV, no. . . help the library, yes," added Smith.
The 2010 Summer Reading Program begins June 7 and continues through July 31. This year's program, which allows young readers to earn points that can be exchanged for great prizes, also gives them the option of contributing their points so that program partner The Kroger Company will make a contribution on their behalf to Gleaners Food Bank.
