Schumacher presented with BRHS award - by Jamie Pointer
posted: May 28, 2010
Congratulations to William G. (Bill, Speed) Schumacher, class of 1970, recipient of the 2010 BRHS Distinguished Alumni Award. It was Bill's idea to have a "Grand Reunion" of all BRHS Golden Singers under the direction of Mr. Gene R. Poston, head of the BRHS music department from 1954 through 1982. Speed planned, coordinated, and oversaw an entire weekend of activities held on Labor Day, 2007, for approximately 200 singers. Included was a formal presentation to Mr. Poston, honoring his service and dedication to his students and school, as well as his conducting the Singers in the "Hallelujah Chorus", and the Peter J. Wilhousky arrangement of the "Battle Hymn of the Republic". At this reunion, Bill also had the pleasure of announcing the naming of the BRHS auditorium as the Gene R. Poston Auditorium, a result of his appearing before the IPS Board and receiving a unanimous approval to his petition. As an especially meaningful gesture to this outstanding teacher and mentor, Bill also envisioned a legacy foundation, which has also come into being. Money received into the "Gene R. Poston Legacy Foundation" (GRPLF) is awarded back each year for the students at Broad Ripple.

Bill received his award as part of the annual Ripple Round-Up program held on May 14. As President of the GRPLF, he had the privilege of presenting two new cash awards. These awards have been established under the auspices of the GRPLF and will be given every year. The "Lucinda Steiner Paul Award" is awarded to outstanding senior in music. Mrs. Lucinda Paul, teacher at Broad Ripple from 1968-2000 is currently director of the Golden Singers Alumni Chorus. She is an outstanding musician and teacher/mentor, and inspires her students to be passionate about their work, compassionate to others, and fun-loving. This year's recipient is Miata McMichel. The "Lloyd E. Huyser Memorial Award" is awarded to outstanding senior in art. Mr. Huyser was a gifted artist and teacher, and highly regarded by his students and associates. This year's recipient is Joseph Stevens. Both Miata and Joseph were selected by their teachers as being the outstanding seniors in the arts.
