Gettin' Ripped in Ripple - Hypothetical Question=Your Fitness Reality - by Laura Minor

Hypothetical Question=Your Fitness Reality
As a trainer, I like to get inside the head of each client. Each person holds a different set of reasons as to why they are coming to see us, and I try my best to find them out. For obvious reasons, I ask each client about their health history, exercise past, and fitness obstacles. . . but I also like to ask other types of questions to bring out the core of how they truly "feel" about being active. One such hypothetical question that I often ask is "If you could always have the body you desire and total fitness without the need to exercise or be active, would you still do it?" Many times when I ask this, people need a minute to think about it. . . they probably have never thought of this before since (lucky for me) it is rarely the case. So, for this article, my clients and friends are the author; I asked them this question and wanted to share some of their responses with you. Anything you see in bold in their comment it is me butting in (imagine that!) to correct any mis-information or add my two cents. Enjoy!
Yes, I would. I would still work out because it makes me feel better and gives me more energy. I've always lived under the philosophy that exercise may not allow me to live longer (not true! It gives an average of 3-4 longer life span) but I'll enjoy the life I've been given more fully by including exercise in my daily routine. Exercising mind, body and spirit. -MW
I would not continue to exercise if I was completely fit and had the body size or shape I desired without exercise. I've said many times if I could take a pill instead of exercising and still keep fit, I would! This is mainly just because of the amount of time/energy it takes to keep in shape.-TD Actually, it does not take nearly the amount of time many would assume to reap the benefits of physical activity. Shoot for 4 days of 30-45 minutes of activity, and you will get many benefits!
Honestly, yes. I thought about it and realized I started running competitively when I was 11 years old and not because I needed to get in shape. Because I started exercising at such a young age, it became part of what I do. To me running is a way to "escape" from the stresses in life and to zone out for a while. It is as much of a mental refresher as it is a physical one.-SW
Yes I would continue to exercise. I use exercise as a form of stress relief. Good way to unwind when life is twisting me every which way. I also use exercise as a form of social interaction. Some of my best friends have come from running and working out. People tend to be more themselves when all are struggling through a tough run or a tough class.-TM
Yes because if I didn't, I would probably start randomly punching people.-DB This one made me chuckle!
No way!!! Shopping for clothes that fit my perfect body would be a much better stress reliever than exercising.-KC Ok, I get that but you might go broke!
A yes from me. I use exercise as therapy (the voices in my head become quiet), it's a social outlet (outside my family I met my best friends exercising) and when I'm doing it I feel free.-JW Freedom is PRICELESS indeed.
Yes!! Stress relief, socialization and hot boys at the gym!!!-AL A very good way to meet new people is to join a running/biking/hiking group or any other type of fitness related group. You can get fit, and get a date at the same time!
If I could have the body that I want and be completely fit then no, I would not exercise. That would be my dream... To just be fit and look like I want without having to work for it. It's not that I'm lazy and would just sit on my couch, but exercise isn't something that I was raised doing regularly. It's not something that is fun for me. No matter how good I feel now after working out regularly with you guys for a year (WOW... It's been a year!!!), I still know that if I didn't have my workouts scheduled with Diana then I wouldn't do them.-HR Hmm. . . I find this one funny coming from a gal that laughs and smiles almost constantly each time she works out; not sure if she realizes that she might actually be having fun?
Probably the most flattering thing of all is that when I asked several people this question, they replied that they would have said no before they started their programs with us, and now they are HOOKED. . . yeah! It was nice to hear that most people who exercise don't find it such a chore and actually look at it as a reward to themselves. So, now I ask you. . . .what is your answer?
