Life's Ripples from Broad Ripple United Methodist Church by Rev. Timothy Rasmussen

"So this is Christmas" the song says, and I must admit it is my least favorite of all the Christmas songs playing on the radio. However, it is a sentiment greatly expressed this year in particular. Retail is so worried about Christmas shoppers that they started advertising back in September. Even the media is pushing its viewers to get out and spend, spend, spend.
With the unemployment rate where it is, this might be the year to slow down the hype and bring back the feeling of an old fashioned Christmas. After all, Christmas is supposed to be about giving of self, not how much money we have to spend. Some ideas to spread the Christmas cheer could include baking homemade breads and cookies to give away, volunteering at a not for profit organization that helps the poor, visiting homebound or nursing home patients, or simply being there for a friend who is struggling through the season.
I've listened to many people over my 38 years of ministry conclude that their best Christmas memories center around times that they gave of their time and talents to help others. It doesn't take money or stuff to have a great Christmas. Be genuine with your family, tell them how much they mean to you and then sit in the glow of their response. That may be the best gift you give yourself this Christmas.
Even if you do not attend church on a regular basis, go to a Christmas Eve service. This is a wonderful time in the church where we get to remember why it's important that Christ came into this world, and that He came for all people. The peacefulness and hope that you take away from the service will be well worth an hour or so of your time, and once again could be one of the best gifts you give yourself this Christmas.
Most of all, don't let the Christmas in your heart end with the New Year celebrations. Carry what you learn this Christmas throughout the whole of next year and vow to make the world an easier place for someone else to live in. You'll discover that the world will become a better place in which you can live. Merry Christmas!
