Indy Jazz Fest weekend September 26 and 27, 2009

It's a brand spankin' new Indy Jazz Fest this year. The Indy Jazz Fest is focusing on education and the long and storied history of jazz in Indianapolis. It has expanded to seven days in various venues with a grand finale weekend of non-stop jazz at The Lawn at White River State Park, downtown Indianapolis.
The Indy Jazz Fest committee probably did not have me in mind when they decided to focus on history and education, but I've learned a ton about the jazz community in our city. Indiana Avenue boasted a treasure trove of clubs and venues on the historic street. Unlike our current national music scene, where touring bands treat Indianapolis as a quick stopover, if at all, the Avenue was the place to be.
Legendary jazz trombonist J.J. Johnson developed his unique style of playing in Indianapolis. Not only did he influence trombone players all over the world, he was a mentor to younger musicians such as David Baker, Wes Montgomery, David Young and Slide Hampton. The Jazz Fest will honor the deep Indianapolis jazz legacy while introducing and creating a place for the next generation of jazz musicians to continue the tradition.
The week of shows kicks off Saturday, September 19 with a show at Clowes Memorial Hall featuring the Joshua Redman Trio and the Dan Tepfer Trio (8:00 pm, tickets $25, $30, $35). Tuesday, September 22 finds the fun lineup of Charlie Hunter, Garaj Mahal and the Twin Cats at the Vogue (8:00, $18 advance/$20 at the door). Also on Tuesday you can find Mark Buselli (7:00 pm, $20/ 9:00 pm, $15) at the Jazz Kitchen celebrating his CD release. Wednesday at the Jazz Kitchen features Claudia Acuna (8:00 & 10:00, $20).
Friday, September 25 at the Madame Walker Theater, on the heart of Indiana Avenue features the Freddie Hubbard Tribute (7:30, $20, $25, $30) presented by Dr. David Baker, with an all-star lineup. If I had to pick only one thing to go to, this would be it. Check the Web site for more details on all of the shows.

Mandy Marie and the Cool Hand Lukes CD Release Show
Saturday, September 26, 2009

I was surprised to learn a year or so ago that Mandy Marie Luke did not have a record out. I assumed she had a couple tucked in her boots and a studio contract under her honky-tonk hat. She's an great songwriter, has wonderful stage presence, amazing vocals and is cute as a button. And she's a damn good guitar player. And I don't mean that in a "good for a girl" way - and yes, that is still said. I mean she's GOOD!

My guess is that she's never more than ten feet from her Telecaster, and probably has a guitar propped against her nightstand. Mandy Marie was born and raised in southern Missouri. She's played guitar since she was 13 years old (which was not that long ago, really). She would come home from school and play her grandparents records - Don Rich with Buck Owens, Luther Perkins with Johnny Cash, Roy Nichols with Merle Haggard and played until her parents made her go to bed.
Shortly after she started playing with her dad's band. She spent three nights a week playing Missouri, Arkansas and Oklahoma beer joints with a "Fender Twin amp pointed straight at my dang head, breathin' in cigarette smoke." Mandy Marie swears that she used to hide behind speakers and stage curtains, it's hard to imagine that shy teenager after seeing the energetic confident band leader she's become. Mandy Marie spent the beginning of her career as a sideman, you would never guess that she didn't sing until she started playing with the Cool Hand Lukes.
I look forward to hearing Mandy Marie and The Cool Hand Lukes record. My bet is that it's damn good.

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
