Life's Ripples from Broad Ripple United Methodist Church by Rev. Timothy Rasmussen

Life's Ripples header

In the last article, the subject of commitment was explored. Over the past couple of weeks I have heard some interesting takes on commitment and what that means to people. The apostle Paul says that if we are to be fully balanced people then we will need to incorporate the physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects to be whole. Most people will mix and match any two of those or focus on only one while ignoring the importance of the others.
My wife likes to take spinning classes and has a group of friends that spin together 2-3 times per week. After one class, one of the ladies started talking about a Sunday morning spin class. She said of the spin class that it was almost spiritual for her because she felt cleansed afterwards. She said that for her spinning on Sunday morning was like going to church.
Exercise is very important for our health, both physical and mental. However, exercise is not spiritual. If this woman feels like she has been in church while spinning on Sunday morning then the church has obviously failed in its mission. The two are completely different entities, and both are needed to balance our lives if we are to live fully.
We were created to be in relationship with each other, but also with God our creator. We need individual time with God, but we also need to be in worship with others and spend time with God in that context as well. There is an abundant amount of time throughout the week to do all the things we want to do. Is one hour of worship on Sunday (or Saturday) really asking too much? Many churches in the Broad Ripple Community are places where the atmosphere is full of joy and excitement about serving a loving God.
If you haven't found one it's simply because you haven't been looking.
God Bless.
