65th and Ferguson trees update from city
posted: Aug. 07, 2009
Following the removal of several trees at 65th and Ferguson (see Volume 6 Issue #15) I received the following explanation from the City of Indianapolis. A neighborhood arborist independently reported the same findings. He also added that there is a chance the trucks are hollow and not suitable for carving. -Alan
Robert Vane forwarded the below concern to me and asked that I touch base with you regarding the citizens in Broad Ripple's concern about the order to cut trees at 65th and Ferguson.
The Maple trees in question were inspected by an ISA Certified Arborist working in our Forestry Department in April of 2008. At this time, they were found to be infected with Anthracnose and suffering from decline and dieback in the scaffold branches. Following the ISA Hazard Tree Evaluation Standards and due to their location, species, age and conditions, it was determined the trees should be removed.
This was listed as an "A" priority and not urgent in nature at that time. Essentially this means, there was an acceptable level of risk to leave these trees for the time being to allow removal of other, more hazardous trees.
Since this time, the conditions have worsened with disease and dieback in the tree canopy. In addition, there were moderate amounts of decay found in the trunk and main branches as well. This change in condition and timing elevated the removal process to allow for removal at this time.
Currently, the trunks have been allowed to remain for reuse. The current plan is to work these tree trunks into some art form using a chainsaw carver. The contractor has been directed to stand back until further notice.
I hope this assists in understanding the need to remove the trees. Please feel free to contact me at your convenience for more information if necessary.
Thanks so much,
-Steve Hardiman, Public Information Officer City of Indianapolis
