Good Wine Good Food Great Causes
If you are looking for a wine that tastes good and also lets you do something good for the world, get your hands on a bottle or two or three of the One Hope Wines from California. The winery bottles five varietals and each is designated to a cause. 50% of proceeds from the winery's sale of each varietal goes to support that specific cause.
One Hope Cabernet Sauvignon benefits Autism research, One Hope Chardonnay benefits Breast Cancer research and One Hope Merlot benefits AIDS research. Each easy drinking bottle is just $14.99 and available at many local wine shoppes.
These wines will also be featured at The Longest Dinner on August 13 at the IndyFringe Building www.indyfringe.org along with Barefoot Cellars Sparkling Wines. A few tickets remain for the dinner that features all local products and is being prepared by Chef Thom England and his culinary students.
Here is the menu: Mixed Greens and Raspberry Vinaigrette, Poe Hamps Roasted Lamb with cherry demi glaze, Summer Sweet Corn and Peppers Casserole, Egg plant and Green Bean Salad, Mixed seasonal berries with red wine sauce and yogurt

First Friday/ Visual Fringe
Friday, August 7 is First Friday on Massachusetts Avenue downtown. Visit the galleries for free art, wine, food, music and fun. It's also the kickoff of Visual Fringe--a competition for amateur artists as part of the 2009 Indyfringe Festival that runs August 21-30. Look for the galleries with bright flags in front, as this is where you can view the Visual Fringe, enjoy a complimentary glass of Barefoot Sparkling Pinot Grigio and VOTE on your favorite Visual Fringe artist.
First Friday runs from 5-9pm along Massachusetts Avenue-just 12 minutes south of Broad Ripple. Go south on College until you hit Mass Ave.

Get Juiced
POWER OF PURPLE describes the benefits of consuming Concord grape juice, according to a major national survey which showed that adults who consume purple or blue fruits and vegetables had reduced risk for three of the five factors that define metabolic syndrome, a group of indicators that may predict risk for coronary heart disease and type 2 diabetes; the American Heart Association estimates that about 47 million people have metabolic syndrome today. The most popular purple/blue fruits are grapes, 100% grape juice and raisins, accounting for almost 60% of purple/blue usage occasions. Unfortunately, however the purple/blue category still accounts for only 3% of fruit and vegetable intake. So if you want to improve your health, have a glass of Concord grape juice. It is also the main grape in most Indiana wines labeled as "Red"-i.e., Oliver Soft Red, Easley Reggae Red. (A great refreshing spritzer is 2 parts seltzer to 1 part grape juice over ice.)
