Brrr! How to Stick with Your Fitness Plan in the Winter Months.
Ah, yet another winter season is on deck and the big mystery every year is whether or not it is going to be "short and mild" or "long and brutal". If you have known me about as long as five minutes, you will likely learn that I am a huge enemy of the frigid temperatures, yet have no problem with the high humidity and heat of the summer months. However, while not easy at times, I make sure that I still get in my daily exercise during this time of year. I understand why many are unmotivated to (or altogether skip) exercise and physical activity when it is freezing, dark, and icy outside, so I thought I would pass along some tips that have been useful for me to head out the door!
Making the Case! For one thing, outdoor activity is a sure cure for cabin fever and the winter blues. It also increases energy, which can be sapped by gloomy weather. Exercise improves your immune system. In fact, studies show that moderate exercisers get 20 to 30 percent fewer colds than nonexercisers. And, it surely doesn't hurt that you won't have to scramble to get in shape for swimsuit season.
Layer up! It's all about the gear! With the right clothing and a little planning, cold-weather exercise can be safe, effective and, yes, fun. Strangely enough, the biggest mistake most exercisers make with the cold temperatures is dressing too warmly with the wrong materials. Physical activity generates a considerable amount of heat which can make you feel about 30 degrees warmer than it actually is. Then when you start to tire and slow down, your sweat will cause you to become chilled. To fix this problem, dress in layers that you can put on and take off as needed. Make sure the clothing touching your skin (bottom layer) is NOT cotton, but a synthetic material that draws sweat away from the body.
Protect your extremities. When it's cold, blood is shunted to your body's core to protect the vital organs, leaving your hands and feet vulnerable to frostbite. Wearing mittens (so that your fingers are touching) with an added hand-warmer when especially cold (available at most drug stores) can be a life-saver! Most sporting good stores have heavier fitness socks to protect your feet. And don't forget a hat or headband - 30 to 40 percent of your body heat is lost through your head!
Safety First! If it is dark, wear reflective clothing or a reflector vest. You can also buy a blinking light so that cars can easily see you. Try to take safe, well-lit and plowed routes. Make sure your footwear has good traction for slick surfaces. Taking a cell phone is also a good idea.
Try a New Sport: Try something new this winter to spark your interest - snow shoeing, down-hill and cross country skiing, ice skating and even sledding are great aerobic activities that will get your heart racing and help tone the arms and legs for spring. I downhill ski every winter and it is a great change of pace from my normal routine but still a great workout! Just make sure to start slow to get acclimated to another activity.
Join a Group! There is nothing like a group or buddy to get your buns out the door. When someone "misses" you, it is a lot easier to brave the cold, and it is a great way to spend some quality time with friends.
Know When to say "When". Even I have my limits when it is just too darn cold to be outdoors. Pay more attention to the wind chill that the actual temperatures and realize that bodily movement creates an added wind effect. If your best layered outfit is still no match for the cold and wind, head indoors. It is only a matter of time until you can head out again. I actually see the benefit of being forced indoors for it makes me appreciate my outdoor workouts when I am able to get back to them!

Hopefully these tips will come in handy when the thermometer starts to drop! Winter exercise can actually be very rewarding. I look forward to the scenery mixed with the colorful Holiday decorations! For many, the solitude and quiet alone are reason enough to brave the elements.
Mantra of the Issue: Why should I do this? Because I CAN!
