1. The ability to change rapidly the position of the entire body in space with accuracy is termed:
A) Agility is the ability to change the body's position, and requires a combination of balance, coordination, speed, reflexes, and strength. This is usually achieved in anaerobic (speed related activities) training. Regular and challenging exercises specific to improving agility are vital to competitive athletes but are also very beneficial for the general public.

2. Which one of the following activities is an anaerobic activity?
A) Anaerobic means "without oxygen" and is associated with quick bursts of energy and speed. Walking, jogging and sleeping are all aerobic in nature. Activities such as high jumping, sprinting, and weightlifting all require the anaerobic system. Regular, moderate to high-intense aerobic exercise anaerobic intervals (jogging and sprinting for 30 seconds every 5 minutes) will train the aerobic system to handle higher intensity exercise without relying on the anaerobic system as much.

3. If your goal is to burn fat while you exercise, what is the most important factor you should monitor?
C) While exercising, the body relies primarily upon carbohydrates and fats for fuel. At lower heart rates (and less intensity) the body pulls primarily upon fat stores. Conversely, when working at a higher intensity, the body pulls from carbohydrates. Therefore, if given the time, it is best to work at moderate intensity and for a longer period of time (45 minutes or more) to maximize calorie and fat burn

4. Why is it not recommended to lose more than 1-2 pounds per week?
B) This is my favorite one to answer! Yes, people do lose 10+ pounds per week on the Biggest Loser, there are a few reasons for this, but primarily they are all morbidly obese and previously sedentary so their bodies will drop weight at a high rate when they are that overweight and add several hours of exercise a day. Losing weight very quickly will lead to muscle loss (not just fat), a decreased metabolism which will likely lead to a future gain in weight. Be patient and it will come with consistent and effective work!

5. During strength training, you might have heard that it's a bad idea to hold your breath. Why?
A) We naturally want to hold our breath upon exertion. However, doing so is termed the Valsalva Maneuver and causes blood pressure to rapidly rise and then rapidly drop when the exhale is performed. This is why some people get light-headed and dizzy with exercise. Good form is to exhale upon exertion, and this will keep the blood pressure fluctuations at a minimum.

6. Which of the following is true when comparing muscle to fat?
A) A pound of muscle weighs the same as a pound of fat (common sense!). However, how a pound of fat looks compared to a pound of muscle is where the difference lies. Fat is more like a sponge, and muscle is much more compact and small. That is why a male that weighs 180 pounds and is 8% body fat looks much smaller than a male that weighs the same but is 30% body fat.

7. How is Body Mass Index (BMI) calculated and what is it used for?
C) BMI has been used for decades, and is a fairly good indicator of overweight and obesity. However, when used on those whom are quite muscular, the results can be deceiving for the very reason listed in the explanation for answer 6.
