The 7th annual Beepball Tournament was held over the June 7th, 2008, weekend at Broad Ripple Park. Beepball is the blind version of baseball. To even the playfield, all athletes wear a mask. As the name says, the ball emits a beeping sound to aid the hitters and catchers.
"We had a six hour rain delay on Saturday," explained Darner Booker of the Indy Thunder team. "We won two games Saturday. We beat the Chicago B team 9 to 7 and the Columbus team 15 to 1. Sunday at 8:30 a.m. we lost in a slugfest against the Chicago A team 21 to 14"
Sponsors of the tourney include Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana (RHI), Bardach Awards, Bright Ideas, Circle City Pizza, Delta Gamma, Dominos Pizza-Broad Ripple, Downtown Lion's Club, Indy Parks & Recreation, Indiana School for the Blind & Visually Impaired, Optimist Club of Northside of Indianapolis, Inc., Pepsi, Sherwin Williams Paints-Broad Ripple, St. Vincent's Sports Medicine Services, Three Sisters Cafe, Velvet Touch Professional Cleaners, and Wills Electric.
The Indy Thunder have put together a team for the World Series of Beepball. If enough funds can be raised (they are about $500 short), the Indy Thunder will play in the Houston, Texas series in late July. Contact Darnell Booker at (317) 370-7231 for sponsorship opportunities or for more information on the team. The National Beep Baseball Association website is www.nbba.org.
