Random Rippling - Broad Ripple filmmaker, Duncan Alney, takes 2nd at IMAX Short Film Fest
posted: Feb. 29, 2008

The jury at the IMAX's 2008 Really Big Short Film Festival awarded Hope, a film by Duncan Alney, second place on Friday night, February 22nd, 2008.
Three films were nominated as the top entries during the second annual Really Big Short Film Festival this weekend, including first place winner The Passenger by Kelly Lynch, second place winner Hope by Duncan Alney, and third place winner Foxxy Madonna and the Black Death by Jacob Bilinksi. Hope is the second short film by director Duncan Alney of Firebelly and was the sole documentary in the top three.

Hope is the second installment of Alney's Emotion Project, which seeks to explore various emotions through one person's perspectives. Alney's first short film, Happiness, was the first in the installment and was one of the Really Big Short Film Festival's 2007 winners.
Filmed on the streets of Indianapolis' Fountain Square neighborhood, Hope gives viewers a few minutes up close and personal with its subject, Dre (full name Dre Berry). The film focuses on Dre's experiences with this emotion and its deep role in his life, with commentary that runs the gamut from an "if I was a fruit" analogy, to the influence of his grandmother, to the role that music plays in his life. Hope is a street, but sweet, film that delves into the complex world of one man's mind and his burning hope. Dre works in the produce department at the Broad Ripple Marsh.
"This is from our hearts, but this film is not Happiness part two," said Alney. "It's a totally different piece that is tighter in its storytelling, yet maintains the same commitment to authenticity."
The top three films, which were narrowed down from 53 entries and 15 finalists, were honored during an awards ceremony followed by the screening of the films Friday evening.
IMAX Theater at the Indiana State Museum presented the second annual Really Big Short Film Festival (RBSFF), in conjunction with the Fifth Annual Indiana Art Fair on February 22 and 23, 2008. To learn more about the Festival visit their website at www.reallybigshortfilmfestival.org.
